so i have an Irish sport horse, he was brought with the intention of BSJA'ing at some point this year, however with the new rule announcement today (to do with microchipping) i find myself in a bit of a predicament! he is fully vacinated so that is not a problem however his microchip when checked does not read, its either moved and we have failed to locate it as of yet or its just plain broken, he's been checked for marking and hair whirls ect and vet says he is the horse his passport says. so my question is can i have another chip put in for bsja purpose or what? any ideas on how to get around this situation? im more than happy to pay the costs so that's not a problem, im just not sure if you can have two microchip numbers on a passport? if anyone can share any knowledge id be most grateful! thanks

DOgs sometimes end up with 2 chips, if the first has moved and its not found on rescan. I 'think' you can get the vet to put something on his passport to say he has been rechipped, and list both numbers just in case.

My big mare was chipped as a foal, when she had her vaccs done a few years ago vet had a student with him who tried to find her chip on the reader they carry in their car, but couldnt.
Got a free appt and they brought the proper scanner out, which did find it, but not where it was meant to be it has moved!

They told me chips can snap and then wont read and if they couldnt find it they would re-chip her.

Also have a tb who has 2 chips in by accident and both chips are recorded on her passport.

ohhh well that's a huge relief then! To know other people have had the same problem and its been resolved is very comforting! Thank you for replying! :)

i have thought about that, so he probably will be registered in feb just to make sure hes fine to compete! but if the rule stays in place and becomes applicable to all members in the future he'll still need it doing, so id rather do it now and not have to worry in the future! :)

If you know a sheep farmer they may have a scanner to try scanning him again, our sheep scanner reads dogs and horses micro chips.

i had a fiend in the council so i borrowed there scanner that they use to read lost and found animal chips and that didn't pick it up either! so its either very well hidden or dead i think! :( i think port of call is just get him a new one, although sods law says as soon as i do that the original will scan!
