I just weighed myself for the first time in a long time and im heavier than i thought i was =(
I am now worrying that im too heavy for my horse. Hes 7yo Anglo Arab 15.3hh

Here he is

How much do you think he could carry?

PS i am experienced so not sat on him like a sack of spuds.

probably a lot more than you think he can. Arabs/arab x are actually alot stronger and tougher than people make them out to be and can acutally carry a fair bit of weight for their size.

He has got a lot of muscle, well built hind quaters and a decent shoulder. So i would think he could easily carry 11 stone.

to be honest, you shouldn't worry about being too heavy for him unless when you ride him he feels uncomfortable and it makes him unhappy! I'm 11 1/2 stone and i ride a 14hh fell pony of my friends and he doesn't seem to be affected by my heavy mass!
he looks a muscular boy and capable of carrying a good 12/13 stone, but i wouldnt worry about your weight, i know its easy for us to say but i'm sure you aren't hurting him by being a bit heavier than you thought you were!
head up :D

he looks a good strong and well muscled boy, and you are a balanced rider. I would say around 12 stone - I would imagine he 'could' carry more than that as a one off, but as an everyday working amount I reckon 12.

It depends what you are going to do with him. For medium work, I would say 13 -14st looking at his bone. But if you were jumping, I think 11st is about right.

Aww thanks skychick, i think he is too Hehe!

Im just under 11 stone so thats fine! Thanks for reasurring me guys , i just worry about him hes had a bad year and i dont want to be putting any unnecessary strain on him. He doesnt seem to struggle...infact the opposite he was very naughty on our hack this morning!! Just wanted to put my mind at rest really

I went on an Endurance ride a little while back and you should have seen the Arabs bombing around with men on them (who must have weighed at least 12 stone minimum). They had no problems at all carrying them!!! It was pretty amazing. So you have absolutely no worries! :D

I am certain that you are not too heavy for him. :) Arabs are a lot stronger than people give them credit for - many riding holidays which use Arabs (reputable establishments/companies that know what they're doing!) have weight limits of 15 stone and these horses are ridden for many hours at a time. (I sell riding holidays, hence the fact, hehe).

I was originally going to say that I thought your boy would happily carry 13 stone for regular but not really hard going work, though I am no expert on this at all. You definitely have no problem at your weight! He is lovely by the way. :)

Your deffo not to heavy I do endurance and it's true what JoBo said. You see huge men doing 100 miles on little arabs and they cope fine. Who cares if you look to big as long as you are not banging around on his back and he seems happy to carry you. I prob look far to big for horrid but i know i'm not to heavy as i don't weigh down his rears, bucks or leaps :p ;) :D :D and thats all that matters:)

Yeah its true you do the most out of the stroppy pain in the bum ones!! I do love him! There has been so many times when i thought i couldnt do it but i am so glad i carried on he is one amazing horse! And been through a lot in the short years he has lived.
Not half as much as yours mind you

Poor boy. What happend to him? You should do a post about it. It's always nice to read posts about things like that espec when they have a happy ending :)

Its a very very very very long story ( i should make a post about it) but it turns out he was broken at about a year and half old (which is why he has back issues) and ridden SJ XC ect untill he just had enough and starting basically trying to kill anyone who got on him pretty much. I bought him two years ago nearly and it has taken me this long to get him to start to trust me and even stand still for me to get on, we just starting to get somewhere riding wise and he craked a splint bone in the autum was on box rest all winter and we have been riding again since febuary just starting to jump again and things. Hopefully things are onwards and upwards, made this post really as i wanted to make sure people didnt think i was too heavy for him.

Yeah my poor baby. I know i dread to think what might have happened to him in the wrong hands. I have just tried to take things nice and slow with him and not push things too hard as this i when he gets stressed and nervous. Sometimes its just soooo frustrating because i feel like he should be doing more for his age and i know he could get out there and do amazing things and its only his mind holding him back

Well done you as they say slow and steady wins the race. I bet once he is ready there will be no stopping you to and all those years of frustration will all be worth it.
Other people keep trying to pressure me into taking Horrid out and doing things but i just say all in good time and all in his time. With all thats going on i have ritten this summer off anyway. I'm dreading moving yards as i think it may unsettle him so much we could be back to square one.

Your right...it does got so frustrating though.
Hopefully it wont stress herbie out too much because he will have you there with him. Thats one thing im very lucky about with robbie he just takes most things in his stride and is pretty chilled really, bless him
