So, as you know I was planning to move Ned to a new yard.
Well, I got a call this morning from a yard that I'd called a few months back. They had no spaces then, but now they do! It's 5mins from my house, cheap and the fencing is top notch.

I just feel terrible! I'm meant to be moving to the other one, but this one is just perfect!

Is that really awful of me? I've not signed a contract and haven't moved any of my stuff over. It's just such late notice!

I'm so nervous about calling and saying I'm not going. What would you do/say?

Don't be silly! If it's the perfect yard and you'll be happier there just ring her up and explain that your circumstances have changed but their yard is lovely and thanks very much for their help and letting you look round. Something like that?

Sit down and think it through

Its good to go with your gut but location isnt everything. The fencing must have been ok at the other yard or you wouldnt be planning to go there in the first place and you must have felt comfy with the people and the facilities.

Weigh up all the pros and cons

I would always, always choose what's better for my horse and myself. I'd call them, apologize sincerely and inform them that circumstances have changed unexpectedly, and that I have made a different decision. I'd also thank them for their cooperation and let them know that, if anything changes and they are still available, they'd be my first choice.

As you have signed no contracts yet, it is totally acceptable to change your mind, IMO. I myself once changed yards only after a month at a new one. Everything was fine, I just found something that fit my needs much, much better - and the YO was very understanding, even though my notice was really late.

When are you meant to be moving? And have you looked around the other yard properly?

If you know the yard is perfect, and you can move on the same date, I would explain to the first yard that you are really sorry, but you've been offered something better.

On the other hand, if you are supposed to be moving really soon (as in within the week) I would be a little wary of messing the yard you are currently moving to around too much, as you might need/want to move again in the future.

I agree with making a pros and cons list of both yards before making a decision, just in case the "perfect yard" isn't as perfect as you thought.

They're both really good, but I do think the closer one also is a tad better.

The closer one was my first choice, but they said they wouldn't have room for ages and now they have room! I wish it had come up sooner, so I wouldn't be in this pickle, but that's life I suppose...eek! Off to make the call...

It's done!! PHEW! What a lovely woman she is :) she was so nice about it and said it might even benefit her, because another livery was after the stable!

I feel so much better about it now. Thank goodness!
