I don't know when I should clip Mr D.
He's beginning to get all hairy and 30 mins trotting and walking makes him a bit warm and starting to sweat. He's in a lightweight rug with no fill pretty much and will be wintering out as far as possible. I really don't want him in at all as he normally winters out and will only be worked once mid week and then on the weekends all winter.
I was going to do a high-trace/blanket clip but can't tell how long I should leave it. I could do it this weekend but I could equally wait

what would you do in this situation? Please!

I am waiting until cooling off takes longer than I have, if that makes sense. You could always give him a chaser clip now and see how you get on. Fact is the weather is still rather nice in the day so it is a shame to have them rugged up to the eyeballs IMHO.

Can you just take his neck off for now? (Bib clip) or maybe a low trace- still enough fur to be warm, but much easier to cool them down!

Lots of people clip around now ready for the hunts' opening meets (beginning of November). They then clip again beginning of January. When we had point to pointers we gave them a blanket clip now whilst they were qualifying and then a full clip after Christmas.

Thanks all. I think I might take his neck and back to his girth (half belly) on Sunday. We don't have much in the way of electricity on my yard as it's all renewable fandagly stuff so I don't know how much i'll get done. He's still warm enough in his lightweight so I'll see. We've got our first evening lesson this week so he'll be hot after that; I think i should try and get it off before then

I would go for that.

Our pony was getting sweaty after just a 10 min trot and so as he's still out we have clipped his 'bib' and through to just being his girth. By the end of the month he will be coming in at night so will have a trace or chaser clip done then.
