I've just looked at the weather forecast on the BBC and it says heavy rain for the rest of the week!
Mine have individual TO so the fields are not too bad, but I won't put them out every day if it's hammering down. It's so frustrating, all this rain - when is it going to stop???
We're really lucky, our YO will allow turnout whatever the weather as they have lots of fields. Even last year when everywhere had their fields closed we could turn out.
It's not nice - our fields are closed from November until April/May time.... it is like taking your life into your hands every time you get on my big youngster at the moment as he has so much energy and no outlet
Living in/around London tho cannot find a yard with year round turnout. Oh to be back in the country!
Ours were out for 3 hours yesterday, but just stood at the gate looking miserable. It's been raining all morning, so I'd be very surprised if they go out again before the weekend. The fields are just swamps, but YO is starting to think that they're so ruined that extra turnout probably won't do any more harm
It's times like this when I'm grateful for my girl's laziness, thankfully she's happy with a quick ride out, but I was relieved to have a night off yesterday
I've got the opposite problem and would like my boy brought in early as he has no shelter and doesn't really like the rain but YO is reluctant to do this
. He's on individual TO so his paddock is fine, the fields with the mare and geldings in are trashed tho, and apparently the mares are moving on Fri to their other field, has no grass in it so no doubt that'll get trashed as well leaving nothing for the spring....WHY move them??!!!
we are still turning out daily. Have only been in 3 days since beginning of Dec and are out from 8am till 5 pm. We are lucky though and have winter and summer paddocks and loads of grass. I deliberately left the winter paddocks with long grass and that is holding the ground together now. The gates we piled wood chippings in and they are holding up well despite torrential rain. We did blow a land drain 10 days ago but managed to get the digger man to dig down and replace the broken areas so one field has rather a big muddy patch but the horses seem to avoid it.
We alos have huge natural hedges and field shelters in each winter field so only keep in if driving horizontal rain and windy.
Next week is looking better - god I hope it improves I am trying to get a young horse ready for his first seasons eventing and am being rained off regularly.
Our 'hardy' natives had going out at the moment, about half the field is a bog and when we put them out they just stand by the gate looking miserable, but they are all too full of themselfs for work. Typical!
Mine have been in since Tuesday, they are not really bothered. Field looks more like a lake than a field. Think I will turn them out at weekend for a couple of hours, don't fancy riding two young ones.......
My mare gets daily turnout on a "track" not too muddy, small lake to cross to get there but she doesn't mind! She was standing outside 10 minutes ago with her back to the hedge IN THE RAIN, despite having a nice dry barn she could stand in with hay! She is still being sharp to ride though, she looked so hard for something to spook at yesterday despite it being totally still, no vehicles, no cats, only 2 people and 1 cyclist. Horses are hard work in the winter!
If we weren't on clay I don't think we'd have such a problem - it just seems to hold the water. I went out poo picking last weekend and there were ponds at the TOP of his field (I would have expected them to be at the bottom!).
Poor Ronnie, wish I was riding him so he'd get more exercise than just going on the walker. I took him for a walk out last night and he was a little fresh
The fields aren't too bad at our yard. YO woudln't mind if I turned out every day, but I have use of two paddocks and two horses to t/o and it's up to me how I do it. I think I'll be on the same paddocks in the spring, so I don't want to churn them up too much. They are on individual t/o at the mo, but i'll put them together when the nights are lighter and rotate.
Mine arn't too bad, have two TB's and they are fine, semi chilled, the little Welsh D x TB is not so fine, think she is ready to go out in the field and roll............Old lad is just chilled and happy not to be out in the mud and wet...........
Our boy has been in since Tuesday. and seems ok with it, but I hate to see him in. WhThe fields are soggy though and the mud is terrible. We are doing our best to get him out for a walk or a spin on the lunge every day, but dressage on Sunday will be interesting if he hasn't been out for a week!
ours are in and have been since Sat as the fields are flooded, thankfully we have a horsewalker and the gees go on it twice a day which helps but it is rather depressing.
Mine have been in since christmas due to snow and then constant rain. Have you thought of letting them loose in the school for an hour or two to let them to expode. That's what we do with ours when we can't get out (and their our fields).
Ours are out two half days per week. I'm lucky that my mare is pretty civlised to ride (tho very spooky in the school on monday with that wind) but she's quite evil in her stable.
The difference when she's been out - especially having a chilled day with her small pony friend rather than a mad day when loads of the mares go out - is incredible!
Our school's got a new surface so can't use for turnout and I'm reluctant to put her on the walker as she's freaked out by the sight of it!
Just hope we can get thru winter without her kicking someone!
Nope, mine are at home so I can do what I want with them. They live out except the old shetland. I think mine would go ballistic if kept in for even 24 hours. I couldnt imagine getting on them after a week of in. I dont think Id stay on for very long!
