In defence of Rollkur...

[ QUOTE ]
After two days, I think I had better draw this discussion to a close and say

many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond,

I still won't practice Rollkur, but mainly because I have no idea how to do it or whether it suits my horse,

it would be great to see some concerete evidence on what is wrong with it and I can't see why people who are against it would not support a move for studies and research into the topic (surely such studies will only strengthen their case),

I will not be signing any petitions to ban it as I can't see any evidence for doing so, or any evidence that might be presented with the petition to make it in the least effective,

and finally some people's dislike of Rollkur seems to spill over into dislike of those who ask about it which is just odd!

If you can't see what is wrong with rollkur, if you have looked at all the evidence, videos on you tube, everything you have been pointed towards to extend your knowledge, then as I said before there is no hope for you. Also for your information the FEI have announced this evening that they are commencing a full investigation into rollkur and the 'blue tongue' rider as we speak, such has been the level of disgust and complaints to them from the riding public who CAN SEE how barbaric this is.

To quote your good self.... excuse me?? Where did I say that?! I would welcome more studies in to rollkur and its effects. Good unbiased studies (by that I don't mean funded by people who train with Anky and Sjef!) are exactly what is required. I have enough faith in my conviction that rollkur is wrong to believe further work will provide evidence showing how wrong it is. Long term studies are required, if for no other reason that to back up the "claims" that it is cruel.

That's a totally bizarre thing to say! You obviously haven't had many debates or discussions on HHO then, if you think that, or at all. It is perfectly possible to debate with someone without it turning personal.

Agree with you - can't see why scientific evidence is required -its plainly obvious that the practice of forcing a horses chin to its chest for considerable amounts of time is barbaric.

I'm a scientist (at least I have a BSc and MSc) and some things just don't need lots of bl**dy studies they are plainly and obviously morally wrong.

I thought dressage was supposed to be a beautiful art with horse and rider working in harmony?

I couldn't agree more. I am also a scientist educated to Msc level and all this nonsese about 'studies' detracts from plain common sense. It is a barbaric pratice with a dressed up fancy name. I would ask anyone who practices Rollkur to go for a run ( or indeed any physical activity) with their head and neck strapped down in an unnatural position and see how they feel about it.

When an animal is put in pain in order for a competition to be won, I wonder how advanced us human beings really are!!

Rollkur - change the name to hyperflexion...appease the elite that practice it...

or change the name to what it is... BITE THE CHEST

which is actually what we are WITNESSING in the training of horses in prolonged deep and round riding...

Why?

so that when we enter the arena we can let the head out and up ?

Why?

Rollkur -Bite The Chest -Hyperflexion - or deep and round, behind the verticle... its against the nature of biomechaincs, it offends the eye and ones sensibilities...

If we were to force DOGS to learn to move correctly by fixing their heads tightly so that they were to BITE THE CHEST - there would quite rightly be mass public outrage... I ask FEI why does the governing body of Olympic and all equestrian disciplines allow - ROLLKUR - A training method that the world condemns as unnecessary, ugly and cruel...?

BTW - FEI there is no EVIDENCE that it works! - winning doesnt count - as all riders using it are in breach of the rule of riding behind the verticle....force/tension...etc.,
