in hand bridles

ok i dont know anything about showing in hand but would like to take my yougster out for the experience. do i need an in hand bridle or can i use a normal bridle. actually what is the difference? help please! i feel very silly asking this question.

If your horse is under 4, it's more correct to have an inhand bridle, but if s/he's 4 or over a ridden bridle is more correct. Inhand bridles have slightly different fittings (the cheek pieces are also the sides of the noseband) and brass buckles. You use an inhand coupling with an inhand bridle, and reins with a ridden bridle.

If you've got a 3yo and don't want to splash out on an inhand bridle for a couple of shows, I'd go with a ridden bridle with snaffle.
