In hand Colt manners.

Unsurprisingly colts can become a bit "bitey" when handling them, I was just wondering if anyone has any good handling techniques/tips or know of a good book on it?

My yearling is usually quiet and respectful but at times his nature can get the better of him when trotting him up or just walking him. I usually use a baton to fend him off but I feel like I'm not really getting at the root of the matter (you know prevention is better than cure an' all!).

I appreciate this is a stallion/colt trait but I was just wondering if there are ways to make him think better of taking chunks out of handlers when he gets excited?

Mine use to be like that before he was gelded he went through phases i use to push him away all the time then he would stop for a bit then after a month or so he would start again now he is gelded and its all forgotton lol

YesI was thinking if it got out of hand it would have to come to that but going on what I've seen of him so far and given how quiet he usually is I was rather hoping to keep him entire.

Just to update on this subject a friend suggested that I use a water pistol to squirt him on the nose each time he tries to bite me, was wondering if anyone else had tried this with any negative effects?

The Little Cigar was an utter sh!t to lead/handle from about 3mths to weaning. I tried all sorts of things (I found the squirty bottle inconvenient as I just didn't have enough hands!) with little success. Since weaning though, he's been an angel.
