Joey and I will be doing an inhand competition pony class at the weekend, and as I haven't shown since I was very small, I am bursting with questions, so if anyone has any answers, please let me know-

1) WHAT TO WEAR? I have a bluey/grey tweed jacket, cream jods, tie and white shirt... are black jodhpur boots with jod clips acceptable? I have a black riding hat which I will be wearing. Is this all ok?

2) HIS MANE/TAIL- Right, for those who don't know he's a sort of lightweight section D partbred. He had a dodgy skin condition on his mane during the winter which cleared up quickly however he is now left with a dodgy mane that is part long, part short/straggly/even hogged-looking. Now apparently I have to plait him up... How on earth do I manage this with his straggly stumpy short bits?!

3) FEATHERS- He has some feathering on his legs, from his Section D side... do I need to hack them off completely, leave them, or just trim them?

4) BRIDLE- Is he ok to wear his bridle? Flash or no flash?

I am entering purely as he's never competed before, so a little inhand class is a good way to start and build up. :) Many thanks.

1) wear a brown tweed jacket, velvet riding hat, tie, jodhpur boots (i'd go without clips, cream jods will do.

2)i know a man who had a gelding with sweat itch that scratched out the bottom part of its mane he had a major show so he cut out part of the horse's tail and managed to plait it into his mane using a few hair pins and plaiting thread! you could try this!you will need to pull his tail, so you could use that hair?

3)his legs should be featherless, but if it is neat, having a long, well brushed piece of feather coming from his fetlock will add a good effect like this- http://www.competitionponies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/S2250015.JPG

4)without flash or a flash loop and with a flat noseband if he has a cobby head or a skinny noseband if he has a regular head. (not only are they not good for showing, but they put pressure on the soft area of the nose where a horse breathes and on the delicate nose bones so are quite cruel as well;) i prefer grackles or cavessons:) )

Really don't think I will be able to get one in time, will blue tweed *do*? I am not looking to be a head-turner, I just don't want to embarrass myself!

I would intend on swapping my blue for a brown in the future-- My last pony was a grey.

Thanks for your response :D

Blue tweed should be fine, as long as it's tweed. Brown or green is more favorable, but I can't see you being marked down considerably for the colour of tweed. I like brown tweed, it's always a safe bet.

As for jods, should be ok, I prefer to wear trousers for inhand (light coloured it legs are dark, black if legs are light coloured - make it easy for judges to see horses legs against yours)

Remember to wear a set of gloves! - This you will get marked down on.

Without a picture I can't really decide whether you should take feathers off or not but with his mane, try and pull it to a similar looking length so you don't have massively different sized plaits and just do your best with the scraggly bit - judges understand this can happen and if its not county level showing, then really don't beat yourself up about it, you'll be surprised when you look around at the start of a season how many 'half-manes' they are!

I'd leave the flash off. As flat noseband for the more hunter types of breeds i.e. welsh D.

Hope that helps, at the end of the day just go to enjoy yourself and do your best with turn out. :)

Thank you Connie. It seems the only gloves I can find in my glove stash are garish 'canary' ones? Eurgh. I will purchase a new white pair. Here's a picture for those interested in his feathers-

I'd get some dark coloured gloves to match the tone of your tweed, so in your case black. Plus easier to disguise mucky marks. :)

As for his feathers, there not bad at all, just tidy them up and give them a good scrub but I'd leave them on.

Thank you, will do :D Ah good. I will tidy the feathers up but I am glad I don't need to hack em off, I love them!
