In-hand dressage

I think it would be a great idea as my horse goes a lot better without me on her. I suppose it would be a bit like free schooling but in competition, or like inhand showing.

Not sure how well it would work, what sort of moves would you have? What would you mark it on, the horses attentivness to the voice or movement as what are the aids? As there are already some things like horse agility and then obviously in hand showing classes etc :). Would they run alongside normal dressage? What sort of people would they be aimed at? Who would teach and judge the dressage? Genuinley interested by the way :)

I don't know pehaps similar to normal dressage except you stand beside (near barrel) , no whips allowed. It would be a good sport for an un-ridden horse.

Moves wise I need some dressage experts to help come up with some,

Uh oh I may of come up with a new sport :D

Right I have got a plan for anyone who is interested

The rider must stand by the horses shoulder, lunge line connecting you to the horses head. You would walk and trot in normal patterns (circles ect)

I suppose you could do leg yeild, you would be marked on turnout, how well you perform the moves and how the horse listens.

No whips and the horse would have to move forward off voice comand of movement of the lunge line, not pulling

Sounds interesting, but not sure what the dressage divas will think. Did they buy those expensive WBs to not ride them? I would love to have a go with my lad, he goes well off the voice, he used to be driven.

BTW I have a WB.so can take the p*ss out of them!

I would be more interested in this than ridden DR! Maybe we could invent a one day event version; so the horse does DR as specified above, SJ on the lunge over a few fences, or maybe whole course with the rider/handler leading (would have to be a very small course than human could jump too), then the same for XC, or maybe inc a few XC fences in the SJ.

I would be too, but you could also do individual events if your horse couldn't jump

i would like to do inhand dressage, but leading them lik showing. inhand showing has given my gorgeous welsh section a a new job, and it would be nice for him to do something like that.
you could get marks for obediance, handling, impulsion, suppleness, and shapes of circles etc.
would be fun :)

You would consider that a sport?? I hope you are taking the mick:(

There's always room for something new, it's just an idea!

OP - I think it is a lovely idea for the non riddens, retired from ridden work but still happy to have some fun without being ridden etc.. Or just to 'play' with your horse!!

Some horses don't do so well without being in some sort of work or just doing something, it will give them the opportunity to have a go at something, possibly also if their conformation isn't good enough for inhand showing!

Have you seen or heard of something similar being done or just thought of it?? :)

We should organise a charity in hand show to see what interest it would get. Lots of people would come as it would be for charity, plus it's something new to try. There could be in hand dressage, sj and showing. Then if it was sucessful maybe in hand DR could start to be introduced to other shows.

Thats a really good idea, I don't where we could orginise it though. I wouldn't be able to compete at the moment because unfortunatly B isn't in show condition, but if I was helping out with orginising I don't think I would have time :D

I'd be happy to organise a show, would need some help though. Maybe in the summer? Where are you based Tinsel_Tree? I'm going to post this in CR too to see what other people think.

I'm based in Suffolk so Manchester is quite a long way away! We could try and organise a central one though?

Or maybe you do a Northern one and I'll do a Southern one as seperate qaulifiers, then we could hold a championship somewhere central-ish.

Or maybe just ask a local show that is already happening to add an in hand dressage class to the schedule and see how it goes?

It could be difficult adding it to a local show, but we are a little bit too far to travel to each other :), Even if we orginised one halfway between us it would still be 2 hours travelling for the both of us.

The north and south one is a good idea, but once again the idea of orginising a show is very daunting.

You might be able to talk to someone who runs local shows near you, and maybe ask them to run the class if they get 70% of the entrance fees of the class and the rest goes to charity or however much- including the charity name in the class name. A livery yard who do lots of little shows near me do a 'world horse welfafe best conditioned' class, so maybe something like that (but with dressage..)

I would love that, as the pony i ride lovesss the inhand stuff, but isnt much of dressage pony ;) bit too speedy sometimes  But i think its a great idea!!

Op are you a member of a local Riding Club? If you are why not have a chat with the committee and ask them about having a dressage day and have the in hand class as part of that?
Or ask for the class to be part of one of their shows, I am sure if you offer to run the class, provide the stewards and judge I am sure they will be more than happy to encourage you.

Unfortunatly I'm not a member of my local RC, The only local show that is coming up is a very for a want of a better work 'Cliquey' show and I don't think in-hand dressage would go down very well
