Hi, am about to enter first ever in hand hunter class but am not prepared! What will i be required to do and what do myself and my horse wear? Thank you!!

kk if its an in hand class then your horse must wear a bridle and as its a hunter it should be plaited! not sure what u wear though, you need to look in the rules for the show!

How old is your horse? If it's over 3, the horse should be in a ridden bridle (if you have one with a double or pelham with two reins, that's better, but don't worry if you haven't). If the horse is 3 or under, it should be in an inhand bridle. Either bridle should be plain (no bling), and flat leather if possible, with a cavesson noseband. He should be plaited and trimmed, with pulled or plaited tail that has been cut nicely.

You should be in a shirt and tie, tweed jacket, trousers (light coloured if the horse has dark legs and vice versa), short boots or shoes (black or brown) that you can run in, brown gloves and a hat (beagler, bushman's hat or velvet covered riding hat), and a show cane if you have one (but it's not essential).

You'll be expected to walk around the outside of the ring on the right rein with the other horses. You'll be stopped in one corner, and asked to trot to the back of the "ride" individually. You'll then walk on round again, and get called in to line. When you go out to do your individual bit, have the horse at right angles to the line up and stand infront of him for the judge to see. Make sure he's not standing awkwardly or resting a leg and try to get him to prick his ears. When the judge asks, walk him away about 20metres, turn and trot back straight towards the judge (who should jump out of the way!) and back into line. When everyone has done that, you'll walk round the ring again, and get pulled in in the final order.

If you can, watch a class or two before you go in, to see what you have to do.
