Hello I'm looking to show my Arab x Connemara, 19 yr old mare in hand this summer. I have absolutely no experience regarding in hand showing and I know there are lots of rules etc! But I thought it would be nice to try something new. Is anyone able to advise on how she should be correctly shown? I'm thinking of entering in veteran classes and part bred arab classes. How should her tail be done? Cut or left to grow out? Pulled at the top or plaited? Also should her feathers be clipped off? Should she have a plaited brow band with rosettes on either side or plain?

Also do any of you have any showing tips? My mare is a strawberry roan (but very light - everyone always thinks she's a grey!)

PBA showing, she will need to be pulled, trimmed and plaited. So feathers off, mane thinned and plaited and tail neatly trimmed/pulled/shaped at the top and banged at the bottom (cut straight), or you can plait the tail but it takes real skill to do a neat job!

Velvet browband will depend more on her type, is she a chunky hunter type or more dainty show pony type? The finer types should have a velvet browband, the heavier ones a plain or plaited leather one.

For in-hand I would practise trotting her out so she will move off nicely and forward (nothing worse than a pony who just wont go :o) and also practise standing her up so she will stop in balance and square (or sometimes it's acceptable for them to be slightly off square so the judge can see every leg). You should lead from the nearside (left), walk away from the judge, make a lollipop shape and turn the horse away from you (to the right) and trot back towards the judge.

There you go Alex has covered it for you, I just asked about the affiliated as with Arabs the rules change depending on how much % of Arab they have they also have to have the passport over stamped by the AHS, good luck with the showing:)
