This has been an education, as is often he case on this forum. I didn't realise you could show in a chifney, how strange. I agree with those who say that if you can't control your horse without such a device you shouldn't even be on the showground.
I am naive, I thought that in-hand showing was about the horse having manners and being good to handle, as well as the their conformation and movement.
I wonder what the judge who placed you would have seen if they had looked in your horse's mouth. I took a horse on a while back that had regularly been handled in a chifney, his teeth were damaged and his gums were bruised. For that reason alone I think you ought to be putting in a lot of work at home so that you don't need to use a chifney.
