In-hand showing and Coloured Showing Class???

Erm, hey all! I am competing the baby (4yr old) in a coloured showing class and in hand this weekend... This is just to give her some show experience before we do BYEH later this year (my showing days ended when I was 14! Much more suited to an event now-a-days!). The in-hand class is just to let her settle, then the coloured class is ridden.

Anywho, I am quite excited about doing this this weekend. However, I was wondering if it is okay to wear my patey beagler... It is black... The rest of the attire,I am very happy with, but was wondering if I can wear this or if I will need to wear the blue hat. Can I wear the beagler for one and not the other / both / neither??

I always wear a beagler for in hand showing. The riding clubs I go to would not permit a beagler for a ridden class though as they don't conform to current safety regulations. I use a blue velver for ridden showing.
 
Okay, thanks. But can I wear a BLACK one? Because earlier there was a post about a showing class that said 'NEVER BLACK!!!'. Was that just a no-no for the cob class? Can I wear it for the purposes of this show??? Confuzzled with al of this showing malarky!
 
If its a local show - black will be fine!

If its affiliated or high standard etc they will seriously frown on black (I need to buy a navy one! :) )

Okay, thanks Lucy. I have a blue charles owen with flesh straps... Shall I just wear that instead? I just much prefer my beagler :(

Okay, now this may be a stupid question, but WHY is it frowned upon to wear black???
 
This is interesting as I wondered if I could wear a navy champion hat for in hand showing or whether I'd need to put a black hat silk over it.
 
o yes!

If u have that, wear the navy CO!! much more appropriate! some shows are now not allowing beaglers in anyway due to the fact they provide NO safety whatsoever! :) lol so yup opt for the navy!

I have no idea why! I think its to try to go with other showing outfits......... e.g. navy jackets or tweed velvet collars are often navy.........

or its that dressage is black and white, showing is something else! no idea, but I know its a no no!! (crazy!)

Oh dear... this weekend shall be a rude re-awakening to the wonderful world of showing! Hehe. Actually really looking forward to entering a showring again! I know the beagler provides minimal (!!!!!!!) protection, but it just looks so good!!!

'Tis a wierd rule though... shall brush the cobwebs off of the blue one!

I know I agree I think they look better but unless I 100% trusted the horse I was on I wouldn't ride in one (but will be buying one for any inhand! :D )

The simple answer is never black for showing (expect tophats). Not for any class.

BUT local level shows won't be overly fussy about it.

It all boils down to traditions. The idea is that a lady would never wear black unless she was in mourning, in which case she'd be doing nothing so frivolous as riding a horse.

Men can technically wear black, and you do occasionally see some doing so. But it is very uncommon. The no black rule has pretty much become the norm.

ohhh, see, I knew there must have been a reason! I love to find these little traditions out! Thank you very much! Am definatley going to wear the blue one now.
