What classes can I show my Welsh section C 3 year old gelding in? And how should I turn him out?

He is not registered & no breed/recorded breeding in his passport. His previous owner purchased him as a Welsh C part bred colt, no knowledge of dam or sire.

He looks like a full Welsh, others have said he looks a full Welsh (I will attach photos).

He has shown locally in m&m classes (unregistered) and always been left natural and placed well.

Obviously I know that I will struggle to move up the levels as he has no known breeding, however I’d like to know if I should stick to showing him unregistered m&m, youngstock & novelty classes

Or

Whether he should be classed as an unregistered part bred and plaited up?

Or perhaps scrap m&m and part bred completely and just show him natural in youngstock & novelty?

It would be a shame to chop his feather and plait him up as I think he looks gorgeous native, and has a proper Welsh build.

Judges have previously asked if he’s registered and I’m now wondering if that has affected his placings :(

Would love to hear everyone’s opinions.

He is a lovely pony. He doesn't have a lot of feather and I know if he was mine I would probably have trimmed it off. I would aim him for whatever classes you have locally. You can't do shows requiring breed registration so just look around for what is available that he won't look out of place in and aim for those. He is a lot lighter build than my sister's registered Section C and the unregistered one I used to have so would fit in quite a few different classes.

Thanks! :)

Would I get away with turning him out in his natural state?

Hes not a section C, he's part bred. So would be shown as type which is probably hunter pony. Trimmed and plaited. I wouldn't bother showing in M&M classes as he just isn't a purebred M&M. Youngstock classes and other novelty classes would be fine and at local level it doesn't really matter so long as he's clean and well behaved, so long as you are aware that your turnout is incorrect and you may be pulled on it or marked down because of it.

Hes a nice pony, lots to like! He would be super smart tidied up, with a pulled mane and clean legs so I'd do that regardless of the showing aspect.

I also think he will look better trimmed and plaited and shown as a part bred, it will probably give you more options as local shows normally do riding pony & part bred classes in hand and ridden.

this is my just-4 year old at her first show (with me) - she was in the youngstock, large breed m&m and c’s and d’s class. She’s registered but this was at local level, so nobody asked if she was or not haha.

stood like a lemon in 2 of these photos but it gives you an idea of turnout! her mane is left natural but i used a solo comb to make it all the same length, most welshies tend to be shown with it at eye level with the pony but i can’t bring myself to take that much off🤣 tail is raked at the sides to show off her bum and keep the natural look, and the end is feathered into a “V” shape at the bottom - again, most people would take it shorter but i don’t like it that short haha.

your boy definitely looks like he could be more of a part bred than full welsh, but since you’ve already got the correct turnout and hair is much easier to take off than stick back on, i don’t think there’s any harm in showing him as a welsh for the remainder of the season and seeing how you get on! i don’t like plaiting so personally i’d probably do that and see how he matures over winter😂

but otherwise, as others have said i’d trim him and plait him up and aim him at the part bred classes, sports pony/SHP and of course you can still do the novelties. If he’s more of a chunky hunter type, keep the tweed but if he ends up more of a fine show pony type then black or navy.

more than anything, enjoy him! ask the judges what they think he ought to be turned out as, majority of the time they’re more than happy to offer feedback. when i was younger and showing other peoples ponies at local level i only had a navy jacket - i’ve been placed top of the line in said navy jacket and further down the lane with the same pony when i had a tweed jacket, so ultimately they’re looking at the pony far more than you at local level!
