I am planning on taking my 18 year old pony to an in hand veteran class soon and was just seeking some advice on it. I have never done this type of class before and was wondering how should he be turned out? I know I will be asked to come forward but will I have to turn him and trot back to the judge or trot round the whole ring? Also is it necessary to salute? Finally is there anything specific the judge will be looking for? Appreciate any answers, thanks! :)

I have done this class a few times. I carried a showing cane. It looks smarter than a normal whip and was not expensive to buy. For turn out I have always done what suits the horse. Usually plaited and trimmed is smartest with whatever bridle suits their head. I use a double or pelham bit. I like a dash of colour from a velvet browband so I will put one on anything that is not a cob or hairy native. That might not be correct but who cares I am only there for a fun day out. The judge tells you what to do when you come out for the inspection and if you wait for a few to enter the ring before you you can watch them do their bit first to have a better idea of what will happen. I do not think I have ever seen anybody salute but I always smile and say hello out of politeness. Good luck with your first attempt! :)

You should always aknowlege the judge at the end of your show. A nod of the head once you have stood the pony up is correct for inhand classes. Not doing this is a pet peeve of a lot of judges.

For veterans you turn out to type and if you put a ribbon browband on a hunter then it will be judged as a riding horse and will do poorly as it isnt true to type as a riding horse!

In veteran classes the judge will be looking at condition, freedom of movement, conformation, manners and turnout.
