My friend has bought a 7mth Shire Colt and as neither of us have ever shown before we were wondering where, if anywhere, we could take him to show in-hand this winter?

He's got one black back leg so isn't going to win anything in a class of Shires as apparently they have to have two white hind legs. Any youngstock classes we can take him to so we can just take him to a day out? Anything that possibly runs some showjumping at the same time so I can take my horse to that at the same time would be a massive perk but not at all essential!

We're in Oldham so have pretty good commuting on the motorways.

There are successful stallions with a black back leg but many judges can't see past it! How is he bred and is he otherwise conformationally a good example? As he gets older you can do the ridden/driven/harness classes and then such things hold even less weight.
If you are looking for an outing I would definitely consider the shire/heavy horse shows as he'll get a lot of exposure to life that is worth its weight in gold. Aim for the smaller shows rather than the biggies and you'll have a nice day out and hopefully meet lots of lovely people. Most agricultural shows have shire or heavy horse classes but I don't know what's left this year. There's certainly the foal sale and show at South View in October but that might be a bit big for your first outing - only one ring though and only shires all day. There is very little shire showing in the winter time.
Which is your local RC with shows? Most have a youngstock class but the judge may or may not know how to judge you!

Thanks for the reply abbijay.

We aren't aiming high, just some outings rather than being stuck on the yard all the time. Our local RC is Oldham & District but I've not seen anyone with babies attending the shows. We'd win in a foals class cos he'd be the only one!! Will ask on their Facebook page.

I'm hoping early spring we can find some little locals that are doing something - don't want to get him giddy even when gelded as he's about 15.2hh already and those feet are massive! 😂😂

Rochdale has a show on Sunday with a youngstock class, have a look at Oldham riding club and north west champs at croft top in October they'll probably both have youngstock classes. Good luck and have fun x

North west champs at Croft top in Oct will probably have a class for you. Also Tudor Rose have a purely youngstock show in November at Croft Top (think it's the 27th)
