Fell off yesterday, thanks to a near vertical buck, am still in hospital. Have fractured one of the (i think it is called processes) bits of the bone that stick out of the verterbrae. Have had xray and am now waiting for scan tomorrow.

I feel very bruised and sore but refuse to be out of action for long - if people could let me know of their experiences where they were back in the saddle in a few days that would be great!! :-D

I've not had any experience of it and hopefully never will but wanted to say i hope you have a speedy recovery and get back to riding soon.

oooh that sucks! (((vibes)))

It could be the spinous process in which case it is the bumpy bits all down your back (like the bits that touch in horsey kissing spines)

Or a transverse process which stick out either side :)

Hope that helps a bit :)

Poor you :(. I have broken that part of the vertebrae but there were several complications found and underlying spinal condition so I won't tell you about mine lol, but fingers crossed with some bed rest and plenty of drugs you'll be on your feet in no time :p :) xx

I broke 3 transverse process' being bucked off onto a pile of rubble :-( ouchie!! Was in hospital for a couple of days for various scans and X-rays to check there was no other damage and was sent home with a lot of pain killers!! Was told not to ride for 8 weeks but, ummm, well I was back on board after 3 - not that I can recommend that as I still get stiff now nearly 10 years later, but I rode for a living and couldn't afford to be off any longer!
Follow the docs instructions to the letter!

I am an ex physio, mainly good for translation purposes theses days! However have come across it before, you are a special case they are quite rare, usually due to some serious twisting and it is the associated injuries that cause the most problems (the whiplashy muscle problems etc)

Good news is that they rarely cause spinal instability and should heal well if you follow all instructions carefully :)

With any back issue (speaking from experience just not your kind) I would err on the side of caution and wait until all swelling and bruising is gone.

Wisjing you a speedy recovery. X

I fractured some spinous processes (the bits that stick out the back) in 2007 unbeknown to me til this year... Apparently us horseriders put ourselves in dangerous positions and do stuff to our bodies no other sportsman does (this coming from a qualified physio!)... anyway, T3-8 are at a more oblique angle now to my spine therefore giving me a weird deformity! :/ I have little problems with them, however my neck which I have injured quite a few times is pretty knackered!

Yes stroppy mare - i got the impression from a&e staff that this wasnt the first horse related incident they had seen! All were very nice except for the one who kindly informed me i would end up in a wheelchair if i carried on!

Thanks for the advice and support everyone it is appreciated! I will also be shopping for body protector!

Sounds painful..so hugses from me too{{}} Am a BP convert after an unplanned dismount resulting In a broken collarbone two months ago. I've got used to mine and don't even notice I've got it on until I try to sit in the car and go oops , I've grown. :)

I can sympathise with you. 6 weeks ago I came off and broke both my wrists. Was told I can't ride for 6 months (end of March) and can't go on my skiing hol in Jan won't be thinking about going back to work til xmas time.. Can cope with missing skiing for 1 year but driving me mad not being able to ride. Will be back on before the 6 months is up and planning to get a couple hours hunting in before the end of the season (but sshhh don't tell my mother!!)

Ah yes, I've heard that one many a times. I knackered my thumb and wrist up in a fall 5yrs ago, surgeon told me that whilst I still proceeded to go near a horse he wasn't patching me up as the chance of further damage was greater. I just walked out! Not prepared to give up my hobby, and the best and most loyal person in my life for a surgeon.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to give a little update on how things are going and say a big thanks for all the messages as it really cheered me up when I was in hospital!

I am back home now wearing a lovely brace (see pic!) The hospital also have kindly given me lots of rather nice pain killers. Have been to see my boys quite a bit which has really cheered me up - and Arthur has actually been a bit more gentle than usual which is sweet!

So far I am managing to do feeds, rugs, haynets (except the soaked ones) put on horsewalker and turn out; but can't ride, muck out or do water buckets. I don't want to push myself but at the same time really hate not being able to do everything for them. Luckily the people at the yard are fab and have been so helpful! Am hoping that it won't be too long until I get in saddle, maybe 4-5 weeks, but we shall see.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who sent me positive vibes, it really did perk me up! :D
