Not surprised. Scammers are everywhere, and animal lovers are a soft target.

However, my firm belief (based on many years of hitch-hiking) is that most people are decent and kind. Hence the number of honest offers of help in response to this 'rescue'.

It makes for an interesting read and I can certainly pin point certain behaviours in one or two local people who 'rescue and rehome' when basically they are in it to fleece people and make money regardless of animal welfare!

It also rings true for the idiots outbidding the meatman not so long ago that got national press coverage which ended in horses suffering even more when going to slaughter would have been better and securer for there little lives. The human race makes me very angry sometimes :(
 
The report about scammers giving a "blow by blow" account of a rescue that didn't happen is scary - that is such a premeditated, malicous thing to do some people are too nasty for words.
 
I often wonder about some of the missing pets notices that go round Facebook. It's a bit miserable to be so untrusting of people I guess, and I would never slate anyone for sharing them, but I do sometimes wonder if some of them are just a means of getting something viral/getting attention. I know it seems an odd thing to do but it's the same principal as chain letters, 'share this if you're a TRUE friend', etc. A quick scan of Snopes.com shows countless email and social media circulars about missing kids that are either out of date, misreported, or complete fabrication. I guess it's a bit of a power kick knowing that something you made is doing the rounds and stirring emotions, :(

Not that there aren't missing pets (and kids!) and social media is a great way to spread the word and help find them. But I do sometimes wonder how many of those campaigns (specially high profile ones) are as honest as they seem :(
