I wanted to post here about Poppy for a while but it's so hard to write it all down. She was my best friend and we tragically lost her in December.
On the 2nd December last year, I was out walking with Poppy my 18 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I work early shifts so we usually walk around town at 5am when there is nobody around but this day happened to be my day off and we were out at 8am when it was very busy.
I live on a main road into our town centre near a large housing estate. I was walking across the turning into the estate (the road was clear) when we were hit by a car that was speeding round the corner. Poppy squealed in pain and broke free of me and ran towards home, which is unfortunately across the other side of the road. She crossed the road and got hit by a second car and although still alive was in a very bad way.
A lovely man saw what happened and took her straight to the vets, meanwhile I was hysterical in the back of an ambulance because I didn't know where she was. I was driven to hospital and told I'd broken my foot. The vets rang my mum and told her that they had poppy but she was in a very bad way.
My boyfriend went to go and see her then came back to the hospital. As soon as I was in plaster and allowed out we went to the vets. She was laid in lots of blankets with drips and bandages and she was just whimpering but desperately trying to move and her eyes just screamed 'help me'. We gave her cuddles and spoke to her and left her in the care of the vets so they could do more tests. At this point they just thought she had brain damage and the prognosis was dire but there was hope.
A few hours later the vets called and said they had done some x rays and the results were not good. I collected her favourite toy, a pink elephant named Ethel and we went back to the vets.
She was so much worse than earlier, she was wailing in pain and although she was still desperately trying to move and 'communicate' with us, I could see in her eyes that she just didn't understand and was in so much pain. The vet showed me the x rays which revealed she'd totally severed her spine and had no feeling behind her shoulders. The vets had contacted a couple of other specialists who all said that it was too severe to be able to fix.
So we went back in to see her, snuggled her up withe Ethel and kissed and cuddled her and told her how amazing she was and let her go to sleep. Even until the last second she carried on fighting and never gave up. We lost our other Cavalier in August to syringomyelia so we buried her in the garden next to him.
I know everyone says this about their own dogs but she truly was the best dog ever. Everywhere I went she came, she made everyone smile, was never nasty or snappy, she cheered me up when I was sad and everyone she met fell in love with her. She converted so many 'non dog people' into dog lovers and helped me through some really ****** times.
Her mum is having her last litter of puppies in the next month or so and we have been given pick of the litter by the breeder so a half sister to Poppy will be bounding into our lives very soon and will hopefully help to fill a rather large orange hole in my heart. Being dogless is so hard but now I've finally recovered from my broken foot it seems like the right time to get a new bundle of fluff to create new memories with.

I have entered her into a competition which if she wins , a photo of her will be put onto a van and her adorable orange face will be seen by lots of people.
