So i have been struggling with abcess in the foot for about 3 weeks now. Has been dug out twice then i poultice and put him out but he always comes in lame and v sore. Problem.is i cannot keep a poultice on him when he is out. Our fields are very muddy and wet and the farrier thought dirt and yuk was getting into the hole and causing it to reform. Everyone says he will be better out for a bit but i have tried everything- boots, nappy, tape, plastic. Nothing stays on and keeps it dry and clean.he also pelts round the field which doesn't help. He has been on box rest for 6 days now and much better but worried about putting him back out again....

I swear by my davis boot, although in this mud it is a nightmare. I had the same problem and have had 2 reinfected abscesses last year.

Have you got a yard or somewhere he can walk on so that he gets to mooch around (which is meant to be good for helping them drain) but also keeps it off the mud

What I did with my lad was have him on 'box rest' with the poultice, and then turn him out in the school (putting plenty of vet wrap and gaffa tape on over the poultice) and also take him for walks every day. Meant it could drain out properly with the poultice, keept clean, and he still got to stretch his legs enough to keep him sane. It healed in about a week and *frantically touches wood* he's all sound now :)
