I am slap in the middle of the warning zone for monday on the side if a hill on a high ridge seaward side , I have alot of mature trees still in leaf all round my perimeter. Would you keep in or leave out. I am worried about trees or branches coming down on the fences and him hurting himself hooning about in the wind on the very slippery ground esp at night and when I am at work and wont be there to keep an eye out. but then I am worried about him being in for that long as he is not used to it and high winds round the stable may be scary for him. ( no trees over stable )

Im in the warning zone too, not sure I'll be able to fetch my lad in if it's too windy, he's a big chap and when he plants it's the devils own job to get him moving! He only plants when it's really windy so I might be leaving him in.

thinking i might leave him up on little yard bit with access to stable. dont think he will jump out ( far too lazy ! )

Mine will be out.

A friend always stabled hers when there was a storm coming, until the time she went up and stable roof and rubble was in what was left of the stables with the horses and they had to dig them out.

Pros and cons both ways.

Just posted on another thread. I prefer to leave out as in strong winds you have more chance of roofs beibg blown off walls blown down etc than horse being injured from debris or trees in field. noise will be greater in as well.

Kal will be in, but a) he's in every night in the winter; b) he'll do himself an injury slipping about in the field; and c) YO lives on-site and will be keeping an eye on her two, so if anything does happen to the stables/barn, someone will know about it/be there.

However, a friend who lives down on the SE coast is leaving her coblet out - he doesn't mind the weather, isn't nuts about being stabled and will probably be happier out in his relatively sheltered field with a suitable friend to keep him company.

Horses for courses really.

P

If it materialises, will put all of mine out & let them into nice winter field. Hopefully the yummy grass will distract them & if they are all together they can choose best place to stand, rather than hanging round stables :)

My Shetland hates being in in storms, she legs it round her stable squeaking, even if she has other horses in next to her! Turn her out & she is fine & dandy tho :D

Out - they are prey animals designed to flee or take comfort from their herd mates and stand together for warm and shelter - not be in individual prison cells.

Mine will be following their usual routine, out in the day and in at night. Our milking herd is currently doing the same. We also have some younger cattle out 24/7.

I am unsure. I have two horses out and the rest are in at night. The ones that are out are used to wintering in at night, but due to arthritis, the vet recommended my gelding stay out. He is out with a yearling. I'm a bit worried because my gelding IS missing coming in at night as he only went back out 4 days ago. I think though, on balance, I will leave them out. I can see me lying awake all night worrying though.

Out in the day (unless horrifically bad) and in at night.
She's a nut in bad weather & her legs are already looking a mess so were both happier when he's in. Stables are strong & roof is strong with very very old thick set trees surrounding it. Never had any issues before :)

Out, as I know the state of the barn roof! If trees come down at least they stand a chance of getting out of the way.. a collapsed barn would likely kill them, and I am not exaggerating the risk.

Having been right in the '87 hurricane line I can see us being up most of the night worrying and fretting.

I am worrying about this aswell. I will have 3 in and two out with a field shelter . We live on the edge of a forest and have leylandii next to the house so it always sounds worse indoors.
dreading it .
My daughter is supposed to be doing her C test on Monday , I dont think so .......

Mine are in at night anyway, and to be honest, I expect they will stay in Monday and be happier for it. My mare hates the wind and becomes difficult to handle to and from the field so it's safer for everyone if they are in. She would only gallop the fenceline to come in if I did put her out, and the two natives are the biggest wimps ever!! My stables are built in an old stone barn with very thick walls and a good roof. There is a big tree outside the yard, but it's been there for hundreds of years and it's not really within reach. As for my house roof....

Mine out, as usual.
Some stud stock will be in though, and I can't help but worry as there are trees very near the block of stables. (The owners, my boss, didn't seem to know anything about all the warnings, and I got the impression she thought I was making it up).

In at night and out in day. If its as awful as they say I might keep in till it calms down a bit. I think I would have more trouble with hypo horses getting in and out of fields. Mine all love being in anyway so they will be very happy munching. Have indoor stables.

We will be battered here on exmoor, most of mine will be out, their field has good shelter but my tb x will be snuggled in his stable. if that came down then I'd be amazed it's sturdier than the house!

Having battled for 2 hours to get to the yard (4 miles at that time!) in 87, mine will be out.
A good rug on FLF, access to both paddocks with field shelters in & they can sort themselves out :)

I dont like them in when its really gale force as too many tall trees by the yard. Also, prefer them out till after local firework displays are over :)

My OH is policeman, they've got emergency planning in place as it really is expected to be nasty (South Lincs) I think I'll leave mine out, structural damage is expected and barns must be at more risk, outside they can race around and yep risk branches etc but if the roof comes off the barn they will be in a mess.

Sadly this sounds like more than bad weather (which I'd normally keep them in for to stop them ploughing my fields!!) they'll get over being rained on for a night

Well put polos mum. im another as well that prefer out through fireworks. the thought of a stray rocket landing and what could happen turns me sick :(

Personally I'd leave out (if they're used to that). A horse would move pretty quick if a branch came down. I'd be more worried about the roof coming off the stables or something! We're lucky and are missing it so hope its not too bad for you guys!

Know what you mean re. worrying about barn roof: ours had holes in it a few years ago and flapped in the wind every time it blew...... so we fixed it. Now it (should be) safe as houses. But we're high up here, and quite exposed, and a few years back we had this special draught excluding chimney fitted .......... in the middle of the night in a gale we heard this horrendous noise, went out in our nightclothes which were nearly blowed off by the wind. The draught/chimney thing, had blown clean off the brick chimney-stack and was lying outside, in the yard. Luckily it hadn't damaged anything too badly, apart from a tiny hole about 2ft square in the roof, BUT that's the last time I'm every gonna be talked into fitting a draught excluding chimney!!! - it was one of those metal things bend around a bit like a letter H if you know what I mean.

So...... sorry, digressing, think the horses will most likely be out; they've got a fairly sheltered field if it comes from the SW so think I'd be a lot happier knowing they're out on this occasion.

Blimmin weather.

Will probably nip to yard every couple of hours whilst dithering about in or out. If I bring them in the weather will abate, if I turn them out the tide will come in on the wind. Sod's law.
