A thread to boast about our lovely welshies!! What have you got and what do you do with yours? What are their personalities? What are they like to ride? etc. etc.

Mine and Vegas' relationship is a love/hate one. He only 4 yet bold as brass, nothing scares him yet he will spook at the slightest thing because "it might have been scary". He prances around a lot of the time and likes to act like a wild stallion yet is totally harmless and I personally feel 1000% safe on him in all situations. He's super intelligent and picks up things very quickly- he was 4th in his first dressage outing in a big class with more established horses. He irritates me 96% of the time for being a 1st class k.no.b yet as soon as i saddle up and he tries his hardest, I realise I couldn't have a better partner

He done amazingly well last year in hand including champion home produced winning an nps silver medal and standing 3rd in the Royal Welsh. This year im keeping everything crossed for a RIHS ticket and a placing at Royal Welsh again undersaddle

Mines wonderful....as mad as a hatter, sharp and a bit of a liability but he's so loving and my best friend. I've had him for 13 years, he took me all through pony club, and was the best pc pony I could ever have wished for taught me loads! He's nearly 21 semi retired now, and just hacks (on his hind legs a lot lol) but he could jump the moon and pull off a pretty decent elementary test.

They are wonderful, and I'd have another D in a heartbeat (i also have a C... He's quite possibly the strangest pony you have ever met!)

Mine is 10, he is the most handsome horse but to be honest I knew within a very short time that he really wasn't the horse for me but even though I had bought him from his breeder he had been moved around a few yards and was a nervous wreck so I have kept him and he is a happy boy. I don't ride him enough and he needs schooling which I hate but I will always keep him and make sure he has a happy life until the day he dies. He can be very laid back but as someone else has said will shy violently at the tiniest of things like leaves falling from trees in the autumn! He is lovely and well mannered to handle and I love him dearly, he just needs schooling which I am not able or perhaps capable any longer to do. Not having a school doesn't really help either. But he is very handsome and that must be true as a friend of mine who is not a sect d fan does think he is very handsome too so I am not just being biased.:)

^^^^ this! Mine is 9 now and he's such a character. He has calmed down a fair bit but its not very often that I can switch off when riding out, it's like he knows when my mind wanders and throws in a spook, or a spin just to keep me on my toes! He was a little sod when he was younger, but everyone still loved him. We don't compete as he doesn't travel well and I don't have my own transport, but I've a feeling that he would create havoc at a comp!

He is lots of fun, very handsome and has bags of character. Love him to bits.

Mine is rising 4 and being broken. Just got in from lunging him and he's going so well! :D
Spooky, but very clever and a quick learner. I think I love him! :D

Wish mine would lunge, he is fine on one rein then on the other he just takes off bucking?? he has had everything checked and he is fine riding on either rein. Just a strange horse I think.;)

I don't know if my boy is a section D, maybe a bit of Irish but I tend to think he's built like a D. Therefore, I'm showing him off!! Suggestions welcome!

He's insecure but safe as houses, and plays with my other like they're a pair of bad a.ss colts.

Mine is rising 4, backed and having a winter break. He's a bit dim but is the most loving and inquisitive pony I've ever come across. He loves being fussed and is the herd groomer. More of a giant dog than horse - will even play chase/catch games! :D

I have 2, am very lucky :p:p:D
Meg I have had 7 years, 8 in May and she's my first pony. :) She is very bold, incredibly cheeky and can be sweet or evil depends on the day :p Very much a marmite pony. Done everything with her from happy hacking to showjumping to long distance rides to hound rides! Lots of fun but now slowing down a little. She is 13 :)

Nesta I have had since May 12 and she is the opposite, quiet and wary of things and quite backwards thinking in her work. However once you find the 'on' switch she's a lovely ride. Much more unpredictable as a ride than Meg though, keeps me on my toes! Hoping to do a bit of everything with her too :) She is 12, 13 in May.

Mine is 8 but only backed a year or so. She is from the Nanteglwys stud.

Sharp, loving, a bit ditzy. She is a bag of nerves when we set off for a hack and a bombproof plod on the way back.

Just started lessons with her to try and get some semblence of flatwork done. In the school she has the attention span of a gnat.

I have a Part bred welshy :D Had him 11 years and I luffs him :D Still full of spark in his later years!! Showed that today getting his gnashers done and flipping me across the stable  :D :D

I saw this thread yesterday, thinking I should probably put a token comment on here for my mare....

But quite frankly after this morning tantrum she can do one. Love all of yours though :D

Iv got two!
my gelding i got at turned 5 yrs old just backed, he was from Hillgarth stud & had a few owners after the stud ( i now know why! lol) he's known on the yard as being a total fruit loop! he is sharp, fizzy, super sensitive, spooky, likes to buck and bronc, rarely rears but when he does he's up on back legs for a good minute!.....he costs nearly £150 to clip as he takes horse sedation, he needs sedating to cut his mane & beard too! lol...& is a nervy yet bold character!...ironically though after riding/owning him for 3 years i feel totally safe on him as i know him, he is very strong & without regular checks likes to remain tanking on the forehand in the school!....he's only barely 14'1 and 8 this May, but gosh he is the most affectionate charasmatic little man ever!, he loves a good hour of cuddles in the stable, he makes you laugh all the time his bottom lip is constantly talking he is just super entertaining....i taught him to jump & he pops 1m20 for fun on the lunge....im stuck at 1m oxers as my limit thou! lol....but he never ever touches a fence or a pole so when i jump him high i am totally confidence in him as he is super safe over the jump and jumps the moon for me....

My other i have had sinxe 17 months old, she's chestnut/flaxen & backed 2012, shes now having a winter break and coming back into work in April this yr at 4 yrs old. she is total opposite, she already stands at 14'3 and is stunning, amazing to school, forward, responsive, soft in her outline, super bold, not very spooky for her age and you can lead her like a dog anywhere, although she is quite marerish when in season & changes a little, and loves the geldings but she has the making when refined to be a dream horse allrounder.

mine will never be going anywhere, there keepers for life. im so lucky to have them both.

i just personally would not have any other breed. if you understand them they really are your dream horse, however if you dont have patience, like to rush things, and hate spookers & are maybe slightly nervous i would say most could be your worst nightmare! lol

there ace!

Mine is awesome! He's just coming up to 10, had him since he was 5. We've done all sorts and he pretty much never fails to come home with a rosette! He's very quick and clever but generally tries really hard and if you give him time he will give anything a go. He's got 65 BD points and schools at Medium, rarely has a pole SJ and is a fantastic sensible hack. I just wish he was a hand bigger as at 15.1, he's a little on the small side for me!

Mine is 4, turned away at present to mature, always been sensible and mannerly yet intelligent and funny (throws buckets/rugs/unties knots) etc.
He is pretty and sweet, having a little confidence crisis at the moment but he is still very babyish, all things considered being welsh and red he is an allround easy going lovely boy. Backed without issue and is very willing and learns easily, Im just waiting for the welsh "kevins" to burst my bubble. lol

Ok I think I have finally figured out this photo business! Haha!
This is my mare, growing her mane so looks a bit goofy!
She is moody, Bolshy and spooky! But, I love her to bits! She is a very fast learner too!
I've only had her 3 months but we have bonded so well now!

Mine is a cheeky little b****r ;) muffin (aka Hillgarth Davie's Dansa) 11 year old misses.
We show and do pretty well in dressage. This year we are also aiming for some jumping competitions. She loves it I still don't know :o
She is enormously hard headed and very sensitive. But give her a finger and she will take the world. Very intelligent, spooky and love her to bits when she doesn't try to kill me  ( just kidding)

I have a 3 rising 4yr old welsh d, he's a big chap and already stands at 15.2hh I've owned him since July 2012 and I love him to bits and can't wait to get him up and running come the spring. He's very cheeky but loves nothing more than cuddle :-)

My girl is welsh D x Dutch warmblood and I love her to bits. She is quite sharp, spooky but very gentle and needs a rider that gives her confidence. Also you have to remind her every now and then who's in charge as she will quite happily take over.

This is my Sec D 'Parc Roberto' Just turning 4

First photo is before I bought him just over a year ago. Fell in love just seeing this photo!
Can't wait to start backing him soon. I'm sure he will keep me on my toes but he is a joy! LOVE this horse

They do get a bit of a bad press I think. They do need work though otherwise they will ind their own things to amuse themselves. My friend who I used to ride for has had several - all Okeden bred and all fabulous horses. One of her old welshies in particular (now sadly no longer with us) remains one of the top lifetime mileage endurance horses in this country. She's just got the two left now and they're getting on a bit :(

This is the little chap I used to ride - he's arab x welsh and over his life has turned his hoof to a number of things:

I did ERs with him and he's also been hunting, showing, hunter trialling, pony clubbing, etc etc etc

This is his purebred mate getting in on the act much to his disgust:

It was partly knowing A's partbred that made me think that I might like a partbred of my own:
