Hi everyone

As many of you are mothers if you took your child to auction and they said joking to bid on a shetland stallion would you bid ? if you have no need or want for a shetland stallion.

well one very clever mum at our yard took her childs advice and bids turns out no one else wants it she gets the horse...

Then she puts in back in auction and sells it to the meatman. how the hell could she watch the meatman buy it ?! has she no heart !

why bid if you no there's a chance you'll win and then have a horse that came from a joke.

I feel sick and disappointed it's horrible enough without the people in question laughing about it :(

needed to vent this was really bothering me

The joke will be on her as not only will she have to pay for the pony but also for entering ot in the sale again on the day. If she hadn't have bid in the first place the pony would still have gone to the meatman, she is just now vastly out of pocket.

Also to be fair to the meatmen they know a ponies worth and if they see a 'normal' person bidding on the pony they will leave it - there's always plenty more to be picked up cheap as chips.

The pony was heading to the meat man anyway, it was pointless her bidding but I'm not sure it makes much difference in the end unless she upset the child. The pony had a second chance that someone else might bid other than the meat man - but it didn't happen.

Only a very strange person would do that... Why on earth would she encourage a child to bid. Obv she didn't think of the consequences. Hopefully the fact she has wasted money will percent her doing it again. I agree with ekw... The poor little thing was prob going to the meatman anyway.

This I'm afraid, what she did had no impact on the eventual outcome for the pony - just on her pocket.

And no I wouldn't let my son convince me to spend my money on a horse I didn;t want/ couldn't keen - no matter what the tantrum he may throw. I'd be the slightly embarised looking mother outside with the toddler lying on the floor crying and throwing himself around while I ignored him.

I know he was probably going for meat but she had a chance to save him. But that ponies life was just a big joke

I'm not sure that such a person "saving" him would be the best result given her poor judgement.

she buy and sells i was hoping when i heard she bought it that they might be an owner in the pipe line once he was fixed up.

but sadly not

I'm sure if the yard had been told we would have all helped pay for his keep til a owner could be found

Maybe she is feeling bad about it and never in a million years thought she would be the winning bid?

Life lesson people - never bid on a shetland stallion or colt at auction because it is cheap unless you can honestly hand on heart say you can look after it/geld it because no one will oppose you. The meatmen know another one will be along shortly and they aren't all cruel and heartless - they will drop their interst in a pony if a normal person wants to 'save it'. You will always win and buy a pony for less than £30.

I have done this a couple of times with mini colt foals, one cost just £7.50. One is a gelded companion with a friend and the other is standing at stud in America.

If your going to do it then look at the ponies future before you do.

I think she just put her hand up whne her daugther told her to i don't even think she thought she'd win.

More of a "bid on that funny looking shetland mum" she's not upset she was laughing on facebook about the whole thing :( I think she paid £20 sold for 10 and £25 to put back in auction. so she's not only made all the other liveries upset but has lost money.

There are considerably worse things to happen than death, especially to smaller ponies who get bought as pets for children by parents who don't know the first thing about correct care.

the meat man round here is well known he will have gone for meat pretty much no doubt in my mind. there would have been no real gain from selling him . he does have a sale part on the side but tends to pick ones that have profit to be made for that.

Sounds pretty callous to me, regardless of the shetty's fate, shame on the mother for laughing about it after, not a great role model eh for the child.

As iv'e said it's pretty unlikely that would happen

I think Lolo means it's just as well it's gone to the meatman and will be slaughtered humanely. Its life could have been far worse had she "saved" it and sold it on, or (judging for her bizarre decision to bid on it) indeed suffered a worse fate at her hands by trying to "save" it.

I honestly don't know why you're upset about it. It's only the woman who is out of pocket after all.

so she's not only made all the other liveries upset but has lost money.

Yes, she's lost money, and yet managed to laugh about it. But how on earth has she made all the other liveries upse?! What has her money got to do with them?

The only good thing is that the pony would not know about her stupid, callous behaviour (towards the child & the pony) The pony was better off without her. Some people ! Hope she has crawled back under the stone she crawled out from.

She may be laughing because she was embarrased at what she did. Certainly her behaviour bidding at the auction was rather juvenile.

Agree that this pony was probably destined for the meat man anyawy - obviuosly his previous owner wasn't too bothered.

Having had a stallion *****land at a yard I was at livery some years ago I think the other liveries have probably had a lucky escape. There is a yard near me where a group of the liveries 'rescue' horses from being pts, start off with good intentions but quickly lose interest. I know what I think is the better outcome for this chap.

ah i get what you mean now :)

it's nothing to do with the money it's to do with the heartless decsion to put t back in auction only to be sold to the meatman when there's there was probably areally caring somewhere.

there's qutie alot of shetlands fans round here alot of them adults it would ahve been easy enough to find him a forever home :( shame he didn't get that chance

I can assure you that shetlands are 10 a penny and you can pick up a pre gelded, well bred pony for next to nothing! I think your forgetting that the pony was still entire and could cause havoc no matter how quiet it seemed! Shetlands are the Houdini's of the horse world and no matter how well fenced a paddock you put them in they will find a way out!

I think the liverybyard members would be more upset if they discovered their mares in foal to a shetland pony!

yes the pony was entire and would have been gelded and there's no way he would have been turned out. I get the feeling here you guessing my knowledge i have had hands on experience with a shetland stallion and so have the people around me. we know exactly what would have needed to happen. i no you can buy shetlands for very little it wasn't about breed or how much he cost. it was about giving a pony which had come into a bad sitaution a caring knowledgeable loving home. I would just like to have been given the chance to do that.

Have you thought about going and bidding on another one if you have the resources to offer another shettie/similar a chance, that way something good could come of this business?

This doesn't add up to me...

he wouldn't have been turned out for the safety of the other horses.until he was gelded and a safe paddock had been made for him. I didn't mean that he wouldn't be turned out at all

Then go find the meat man who bought the pony. They may still have it as they only ship when they have enough to make it worth while.
i will try :)

good idea i'll certainly keep it in mind :)

What people really need to do is to stop buying crap shetlands, running them on, breeding from them and not registering them then half of these messes wouldn't exist! But that's another rant altogether.
