In theory, can any horse/pony do medium or extended trot?

our little 11hh pony can do a super medium trot when he tries

and he's not exactly the most athletic of little ponies...

a good judge will reward a horse doing the best extended trot that IT can (based on breed, conformation, stage of training etc) accordingly.
i used to dr write for a friend at the lower levels, who once gave a cob amazing marks, saying that it was doing the best it could, of course it didn't look like a warmblood doing it BUT it was absolutely correct, soft, engaged, balanced, etc etc.
no coincidence i think that he is now an absolutely top-level judge...

I do agree with you there (I have only been a writer once though) although I still think there are an awful lot of judges out there who mark for 'pretty' looking horses, esp the toe flickers ime.

The judge I wrote for had me writing essays on her sheets, great for the riders but tough on my hands! One of my favourties of the day was 'I wanted to stand and applaud during some of the movements'. My friend still has a sheet from this judge from years ago and remembers the comment 'I could write music to his rhythm' She says she nevers hgets invited to be on panels etc as they all know she is too nice to people!

(but what is needed at the lower and unaff levels imo)

My cob has a super extended trot. It comes and goes but that's inexperience rather than lack of ability.

On the judging front - he did once get the comment 'paces restricted by size'.

Well, given he's a short-legged 15.1 cob it's hard to see how they would't be!

I certainly think any horse can extend/produce a decent medium trot

However many fail to do so because people try and teach it before they do collected work and just push the horse onto its forehand. Until the horse has learnt to take the weight behind (through collection) then it won't be able to really work over its back and cover the ground

My fab cob, whom I used to event, had the most amazing exended trot. It was frequently commented on in the hunting field, but I was buggered if I could get it inside dressage boards!!!!!!!

I had his twin I think OG, I used to run out of 'rise' when he extended down the road out hunting.
