Jacob has a very high wither and prior to me owning him was in a very wide saddle passed down from a Shire, which carried a 20+ stone rider and which sat resting completley on them. He does have white hair from the damage and shows signs of being visibly uncomfortable when I palpate it. He will put his ears back and jerk his head up if I cup my hand over his wither and squeeze, but he does not have any pain reaction through his back, either side of his wither, through his Trapezius or any other back/neck related area.

My Osteo says that she no doubt believes he has some arthritic changes in his wither but that she isn't much concerned as he doesn't react at all unless you apply pressure in this specific way, not to rugs being put on, being ridden or pressure on other parts of the wither.

However, I am wondering whether I should have it xrayed with a view to potentially injecting it? You never know how stoic a horse is being and I wouldn't want to think there is more going on there, or is it a case of 'if it aint broke, don't fix it'?

WWYD? I'll try and attach a photos of his wither and where I put his saddle so you can see what I mean, I've never seen one quite like it - please note though that the lack of muscle either side is a work in progress.

Absolutely get it checked. A quick X-ray of the area isn’t too pricey and will either give you confirmation and the ability to work with what you know and help him out with it or put your mind at rest.

Poor chap. I would also get xrayed. It’s not going to do any harm and might give you a better picture if there is anything that can be done.

Get it xrayed I have had great results using steroid in wear and tear type bony issues in the back .
The chiro should have told you to seek veterinary advice .
