My 5 year old NF mare, is unclipped and out 24/7, in a MW with neck and HW no neck (alhtough its a light HW if that makes sense) Her ears dont feel hot or cold, but she is warm n toasty if i put hand inside rug, but not sweaty.

Think she is to hot???

Every horse is different, my elderly clipped warmblood is in less than that, but you are the best person to know!

-3 is not really that cold for a native though, they are well designed to cope with cold temperatures.

If she is underweight I wouldn't worry about changing rugs, it is near impossible to put weight on a cold horse! As long as she is not sweating and has plenty of forage to keep her warm from the inside out she should be fine!

I expect someone will be along soon to disagree with me but I really think every horse is different. My horse doesn't seem to feel the cold despite being oldish and clipped and not native

:)

My on the way to being nicely covered warmblood, has a medium weight on with no neck and a light weight on over the top, but thats just to stop her field mate from shredding her good rug and she's toasty inside which is how she should be to keep all that Baileys outshine where it should be!

Hi Brambridge, an unclipped NF would cope unrugged no problem, I would take the HW off.

I think if you take the HW off now she'll feel the cold as she's been used to both. I'd take the mediumweight off if you're worried & see how she feels. Check between her hind legs for temperature, as well as the very base of her ears. I have a clipped dartmoor in a medium (200gram), a 20yo welsh b & a Polish WB type in heavy mediums (280 & 300gram) - both unclipped, none have neck covers, all are toastie :)
