Inconsiderate drivers ending up in arguement!!

Last weekend we were on a single track lane near our yard, with high hedges on both sides. Heard a car coming behind and indicated we would pull over in a passing place. Were single file and right to the side but not enough room to pass.

The stupid women just kept coming past me. She had her window down and I said 'it's too narrow to pass you muppet', my stirrup touched her car! I wanted to kick her wing mirror but my boy wasn't bothered at all and I didn't want to create aggro and startle him. My friend in front moved her horse into the road more but the woman didn't want to stop. We were literally 15 yards from a pulling in place. Completely bonkers.
 
If there is not enough room for one horse and one car and there is more than one horse - RIDE SIDE BY SIDE

That is perfectly legal and makes the situation safer

Wait until decent passing place is found and then allow car to pass

If its a M/C then go into single file and wait for it to pass

I find women and young girls the worst offenders for this sort of behaviour. Generally, though I have had the odd one, the young lands are far more switched on and see a horse well up front and either pull in and let horse past or slow right down. I always make sure that I give a big wave and call out "thank you very much" to them and when they see me again they do the same.

The girls however are another story. They are generally chatting either on their phones or to their passengers and are totally oblivious as to what is up ahead and as OP said if you challenge them you get a lot of abuse. Best to get reg number and report to police if you can.

OP I hope this incident has not upset you too much and that you enjoy many happy years with your new horse.

We were actually riding side by side and when we heard the car we looked behind, said we would move to the passing place. My friend then moved in front of me to get there and the driver just came past. TBH, we don't have many problems round our way so weren't expecting her to come past.

We always ride two abreast round these lanes so cars coming round can see us easier but don't usually have any issues. Luckily my boy couldn't care less what passes us, but a less chilled out horse would have found it a bit much.

no, once i had calmed down i was ok :) :) luckily new boy is very good with cars, altho my friends horse isnt really great and hence the dancing about in the middle of the road with the car still coming at him!!

agreed, altho the mouthy teenager certainly didnt think so :rolleyes:
 
I have 2 say i was disgutted that the only vehicle that didnt slow down for us was some1 in a big horse box who actually excellerated past us, when we were out on saturday. Luckly the road was pretty wide.

Don't start me on horsebox drivers. I ride on the A360 quite a bit, and of all of the larger vehicles I see horseboxes are the least likely to slow down, especially those being driven by profesionals.
 
To be fair to the OP if the lane isn't wide enough for the car to pass one horse then it doesn't really matter if they were riding single file or double to get to the passing place, the car wouldn't be able to pass either way! If the car had just waited a short while they would both be in the passing place and the car could go past safely.

I too find horseboxes the worst!!

I had a driver with a trailer over take us on a blind downhill bend. This was after we'd stopped at the top and told him to wait. Saw him in the village stopped and mentioned overtaking us on a blind bend and he said our horses were cheeky being out from the verge. No it was to stop you passing. He then said he always passes horses with care, yea I couldn't dispute that, but you did it on a blind steep, downhill bend. Honestly!!
 
I was going straight on at a roundabout on Saturday, correctly placed on the road, and not indicating (as approaching 1st jucntion which I was not taking), when a car zoomed up, looked alarmingly like it was going to try and squeeze past in front of me to take the turning (a slip road onto a dual carriageway!), when I stopped (now slighly over the junction, so obviouly not taking the slip road), made eye contact with the car driver, checking that he would wait and let me proceed. Car screeched to a halt, stalled, traffic backed up behind it, and the driver, while revving and trying to start his car, rolled down his window and shouted at me for not indicating! I was going straight on!!!! (would have started indicating when past the sliproad to show I was taking the next exit). Not sure what he was thinking of (apart from getting to the dual carriageway as quickly as possible, horse in the way or no horse!).
 
My boyfriend was out on his motorbike at the weekend and came across a lady on a horse coming towards him. He slowed right down to almost a stop so as not to spook the horse (having been well trained by me lol). Some idiot in a car came up behind and overtook him almost taking out the horse in the process. Unbelievable! :mad:
