Ok, So this may just be me being fussy but I was wondering if anything that annoyed people on the road or in the field like this had happened. So I had my mare tied up in a quick release knot on some bailing twine. Then a car races past which was going faster than the speed limit. Saw me and my horse and then started beeping their horn. I didn't know this person and the road was completely clear. He just did it because he saw my mare. My mare tore off, breaking the bailing twine and it took me ages to catch her again! grr. Has anyone had anything like that happen too them?
 
Deliberately spooking a horse isn't just idiotic, it's criminal, and what OP describes was no doubt deliberate. I have had someone pull alongside my carriage and hit the horn on purpose. Pony, to his credit, didn't even flinch.
Fortunately it's rare.
 
Sadly this is something our particular brand of "hunt monitors" do frequently when the field is crossing a road. Revving engines and sounding their horns. Mostly now no-one spooks but it is always massively risky. Whatever your thoughts about hunting no-one who claims to be there to protect animals can justify that. As goldenstar says - the world is full of idiots.
 
Totally idiotic behaviour by the car driver. Forgive me if I've got it wrong though, but you may want to find a safer place to tie your horse? It doesn't sound ideal having her close enough to the road that a car can spook her and cause her to flee.
 
Been in a similar situation.

Was long reining pony to break for driving, smiling, thanking people - had an escort, had tabard on with 'thank you'... and an idiot went past in a Subaru and beeping his stupid horn.

Again on another occasion, was out riding up a country lane... an idiot late for 'Golf' I assume decided to squeeze between my horse and the kerb, leaving not more than 5 cms between his wing mirror and my stirrup.. wound down his window and gave a lot of verbal abuse, on how I should have stopped, crossed over the lane, and parked my horse in a drive way.. when I pointed out he had just passed two drive ways...on his side , also pointed out highway code and all that...

Seriously - IF I was not riding my 'Unicorn' I would of dismounted and given him a real mouth full.

Must admit.. I did take my phone out of my pocket and took a picture of him and his car number plate (as I should mention, he did actually turn the car around to take chase - so pleased a dog walker arrived as a witness.. of course he drove off - BUT I reported to police!)... yet I recognised him as a local !


What I don't understand is... I live in a village... where... horses, ramblers, dog walkers, 'weekend 'Tour-de-France' all enjoy being out... I mean.. its why the house prices are so expensive ! we are / were living in the 'Emmerdale' bubble... but sadly... everything is changing...

I don't know where these people have come from...but I hate to think they are locals as they really are rude Vile people, who seem to go out of their way to cause upset or even worse, and accident. people visiting generally are actually polite and like seeing horses.
 
My daughter was riding through a village local to us and I was cycling behind. A car drove past wound their window down and shouted into our ponies face! He didn't bat an eyelid, but I did report it to the police and explained how this could have turned out if it had been a different horse/pony. They went and paid them a visit to give them a talking to about how stupid it was. Do these morons forget that their car has a registration number?
 
Idiots will be idiots, unfortunately they seem to survive modern day life. I will be investing in a hat cam and reporting anyone and everyone to the police. I'd love to turn into a bit of a vigilante to be honest and track down where they live and slash their tyres or something equally petty and idiotic but I'm better than they are so I wont!
 
There have also been incidences where people have been out walking with children of around 8-10 yrs old say "go say hello to the horsey" and the kids run up to the gate and scream at my horse and pull her mane. Their parents just say "how sweet" while my mare is freaking out because they're yanking her mane. This has happened more than once and I can never catch her for at least an hour after that sought of thing. People yelling at my horse and people feeding her various different things like oatcakes (goes nuts if she has oats) and it drives me round the twist! my mare likes to stand with her head over the gate so people can get really up close and personal.

I'm afraid it definitely was deliberate, he only beeped his horn when he spotted my mare.
 
We used to have an idiot do this! Our riding arena was right next to the road and some idiot in an extra would often blast his horn on the way past.... But only if there were horses in it!!!

Thankfully my boy could give a flying fork about it.. But others were not so lucky! Peopl really are stupid!
 
I was riding along a very narrow lane. Friend was in front on her tb, I was riding my massive cob ( think drum horse) when the local idiot started tailgating me and honking his horn...he was literally almost touching his hocks. Cob wasn't having it, he gave both barrels and just pulled it before he hit the bonnet. Suddenly local idiot decided he could keep back and drive slowly and quietly until we could pull into a gateway. I met him several times after that and he always behaved...I guess seeing the power of 850kg of horse taking a swipe at you must be pretty sobering.

Defence of some of the idiots out there, my partner was driving one day and was passing a horse and rider, passed lovely and wide and slow, but had his elbow on the car windowsill and of course just at that second his elbow slipped and his hand hit the horn! He was utterly mortified as it was a complete accident but was too horrified to stop and explain that it wasn't on purpose. The rider was understandably shooting him daggers! Must have thought he was a massive bar steward, slowing down jurist so he could beep at them. I don't think he'll forget that soon!

Love this. Reminds me of my last Terrano, which had an intermittent fault on the horn, and would periodically go off repeatedly for no reason... we eventually managed to translate the Japanese writing on the fuse box, and disabled the damn thing altogether. :)

Can't stop grinning at this one (cos it didn't have bad consequences) Splendid Sod's Law example. Can just picture it.
 
A similar thing happened to me and my pony, but we were in a stubble field - driver went past and stuck his arm out of the window with his middle finger up and me thinking it would be someone from the lovely tiny friendly village I'm from and was near, waved at him. I later realised what he was doing and am glad I gave him a cheery wave! I also cycle and get various abuse from that too. And I drive, but I am considerate of other road users, still get abuse when I drive!
