Grrrrr - Went out riding today on my mates lovely coloured. I get very nervous on roads because I don't have much experience on them so my mate ( the younger one of the two of us:p) went on the outside and I rode on the inside. Well some idiot sprayed the road near the horses feet with the jet-wash causing him to jump obviously and then another idiot let their dog run at us making poor henry canter off with me. Also I managed to come off and the stirrups were too small so I got my foot trapped, luckily Henry stopped and let me get back on. Sorry for the rant I'm just annoyed

It never ceases to amaze me the number of total idiot people we come across out hacking. I'm glad to hear you are alright though as a very nasty accident could have happened.

How flipping awful for you. Unfortunatly the world is full of numpties like this.

Glad you are ok xxxxxxxxxxxx

Do you think you are confident enough/ready to start hacking out yet?
I wonder if maybe a totally laid-back bombproof horse would start you off. Spooky things like that will happen on hacks (I know coz they happen all the time when I'm out). The last thing you want is a loose horse on the road. Hacks like these will also diminish your confidence.
I also think you might be better on the outside so that you are not directly exposed to the traffic which might be more of an issue if your horse spooked.

I do normally hack on bridle paths, Henry is normally bombproof but the jet wash obviously made him jump and personally I would run from a charging dog.

When I say in the inside I mean close-est to the pavement

Another numpty to join the numpty club! Peoples lack of savvy really never ceases to amaze me! It's happened to many of us so I wouldn't worry, silly people like that don't help! Hope it hasn't dented your confidence. Glad to hear your okay though. :) x

aww hope ur not too scared to ride out on the roads again
some people are so stupid one person puts windmills in thier garden and they spn and squeak and my pony hates them!

Oh no - just what you need when trying to increase your confidence! Hope you are OK and not sore in the morning. Good horse though for not running off when you fell.

Not nice, glad you're OK and got back on.

In response to the 'numpty/idiot' comments. Most people haven't got a clue about horses and just don't expect them to react hence they carry on doing what they're doing because it just doesn't occur to them that the horse may be spooked by their behaviour. This doesn't make them numpties, just not people with horse experience. I find that the majority of people are perfectly willing to pause what they're doing and let you get past safely if you ask! And once you've asked once, been polite and thanked them then they'll be more likley to realise a potential problem next time they meet a horse and rider and react accordingly :)

As for someone having windmills in their garden, it's their garden they can put what they please in it.

Glad you are ok :)

Just to say, most people dont have "horse sense" and so they dont know that power washers are known as horse eating water jets :)

If you ask them to turn things off etc. then they will know for next time :)

My horse is a saint on the roads and is the yard nanny to hack with - but even he took a tantrum when 12 chickens were all running the SAME way in a pen!

Even though the daft bugger lives with 30 chickens and shares his food with them/chases them out of yard :p :p

David Platt from Corrie nearly took me and Kelly out in his '10 plate Range Rover...we were walking out, two of us with Kelly in hand (not back in work yet!) and he came flying round a blind corner - doing over 30 may I add - and missed us by inches!!
The other woman screamed, I just lost my breath completely, and Kelly the absolute angel, just carried on marching forwards!!!
SO annoying though when there are ALWAYS horses on that estate and people should know that!!!

ETA, I'm not a rider who thinks cars should be banned off the roads :P just that if we're considerate to them whilst riding (which I make a point of being!) they could at least keep one eye out for us and even more so, stick to the speed limit...there are children on the estate too!!

It annoys me so much (and scares me) when i am on the lanes around my land, its all countryside and bendy lanes but the drivers go round at the ridiculous road limit of 60mph!! Why are country lanes set at this speed plus why dont people speeding through blind bends think dohhh i am in countryside i might meet animals...Christ dont get me going, its my biggest annoyence ever! I have stood screaming at my daughter before to wave a BMW driver down at enormous speed. he just missed us by an inch and we were just walking our 2 year old pony who never batted an eye. The driver couldnt apologise enough and pulled up to see if we was ok. I 'politely' told him he nearly killed my 10 year old daughter who wanted to save her pony.....it really puts me off riding out now, selfish car drivers say we shouldnt take horses out if they cant behave on the roads.... pot...kettle...black anyone x

No idea why they are 60mph it seems ridiculous to me!! I'd never go that fast!
OP I'm glad you are okay after your experience but don't let it put you off road riding!! :)

I understand that some people haven't got much horse-sense :p

What I was told when I first started riding and people where leading/riding ponies through the yard was ' Treat the horse and rider the same way you would treat a lady pushing a sleeping baby in a pram' Its worked so far:D
