for the past few days my horse has had on and off diarrhea(sp?) and i have no idea what the cause is. i havent changed his feed or the amount of hayledge he is on, and he is lightly excercised every few days. he seems bright in himself although a little lethargic, but i dont feel he urgently needs the vet.

he has normal stools, then very loose ones, and this is what is confusing me..

anyone know what could be causing this?

My horse went through a period of this not so long ago, and has done most of the time I've had him (7 yrs). Think its to do with constantly changing from grass to box rest at the time but now he's been given the all clear to go out again he's droppings have been much firmer.

Vet said time to worry is when they are scouring constantly for days and days, i.e. week or more and then they could become dehydraded.

Think I would get your horse on NAF haylage balancer,http://www.naf-uk.com/products/detail.php?id=94 there is a lot of acid in haylage, something that I have only just discovered which is something I think has had a huge impact on my horses digestion over the years.

Hmmmm ... I'm going to have to think about that one

my motto is when in doubt get the vet

i would get vet check the horse out??
blood tests etc
thats the first thing i would do .

followed by
give him bland diet
no carrots ( can cause the runs )
no frosty grass
has there been any spraying nearby fields?
new horse can stress them out
take a worm count
no haylage
sugar beet

just like when u give dog chicken and rice.

then wait for vet results

then maybe gut balancer / pink powder

he has not been eating frosty grass as he's not actually been out for a while. hes much better now, we discovered the cause was the treats from his advent calander (much to his disappointment!) thanks everyone for the suggestions :) @applecart14 ive ordered some hayledge balancer, lots of people have suggested it to me so hopefully it'll make a difference!
