Hey,

This is the first time I have posted in here. I hope you're all nice to me ;-)

I own a 14/15 year old border collie bitch who is incontinent. She has been on Propallin for nearly a year and this worked until recently. We have also tried Incurrin in combination withthe Propallin but it doesn't work either :-( She 'leaks' a bit during the day and fully floods her bed each night.

If anyone has any advice/tips I would be ever so grateful

Many Thanks

Someone on a dog forum I'm on has recently had great success switching her incontinent dog to raw diet (having tried Incurin and Propalin too - the latter with some success but not a total cure)
She had tried grain-free diets and noticed a slight improvement but no total cure. The raw diet she feeds isn't actually a grain-free diet as she feeds one of these complete raw diets and still feeds some treats with grain in, but I can only recall one or two incidents being mentioned - and that is over many months.
Could be worth looking into. I think she feeds the Natures Menu nuggets but there's quite a lot of options in terms of raw feeding.

This happened with my JRT bitch and it turned out her kidneys were failing. A dog can apparantly manage very well with no outward signs on a third of its kidney function which our bitch obviously had done for some time. It was GA for an op that tipped her over the edge and it was by then too late :-(

have you discussed the fact that what she is being given is not working for her with your vet since she had incurin and propolin?

I will be speaking to him this week. On our last visit to him (a month ago) I got the impression that those were our only 2 options.....

I'm also keen to try non-drug remedies (like the diet idea). I hate given her a bunch of medication if I can help it.

Burge - did your JRT drink a lot?

does your dog drink a lot and seem hungrier than normal?

kidney failure can have symptoms such as drinking a lot but so can other things

i would go back to the vets sooner rather than later

She's not hungrier than normal and she drinks more than she used to but not excessively (no where near what my old dog with diabetes used to drink like).

I'll take your advice - thanks

Would be a good idea to get a urine sample to the vet to check for infection. Also there are othe dieases which cause increased drinkinhg an urination preventing the medication to work,. We used to use ephedrine hydrochloride tabs for incontinence as well so might be worth looking into that.

Natural Instinct raw comes pre-prepared in trays, a balanced diet with things like butternut squash and salmon oil added - NO grains  (Natures menu is ok but still filled out with rice.)

Switching to this may be of some help but its not going to cure it... however providing her with the best of the best nutritionally can only be a benefit to her and also, she will want to drink less on it than on a dry food. My young dog has polydipsia and drinks to excess on dry kibble, then wets her bed. She is 100% on this food. Thats not to say its the same as age related incontinence, but it may help. They are so helpful if you give their nutritional helpline a call and they do have a ‘senior’ version. Hope your wee dog gets better x
