I have a mare that foaled a week ago. In the last few days she appears to have some incontinence when trotting and cantering in the field. Has anyone come across this and if so, what was the treatment and prognosis?

If you are only seeing her pass liquid "involuntarily"(not droppings), then it's most likely to be fluid left in the uterus post foaling - the best thing she can do it trot and canter around to bounce it out. It is extremely common, so try not to worry. If it goes on for more than a few days, you would be wise to discuss with your vet the matter of washing her out, to be sure she's clear of anything that could fester. You will probably want to rinse her hind legs and tail down as well, as what comes out will dry on her and might attract flies.

It is possible she has slightly damaged her baldder foaling, we had one do this, big foal, long delivery, and she peed as she trotted. Vet said monitor her and only treat if needed, it wasn't and she soon was normal.

Yes had the same thing with my TB and her first foal, had vet out and he said she'd be ok after a while and she was after her first season, that seemed to put things back in place.

I kept her clean though and used some nappy cream to stop it burning between her back legs.

I have a mare which suffers incontinence after foaling and it is very noticable when like your mare, she trots around the paddock showing off her new foal.

Never causes any adverse problems - legs get dirty and need washing especially when as hot as it is at the moment. When teasing to go back in foal, you do get a false impression as she wees when not in season as well. This problem has always cleared itself up once the muscle tone has come back - can take a few weeks to be properly sorted.
