I'll try and keep this long story short. My mare had laminitis and is now all clear. However one of her front legs remained really sore. She's had two lots of x rays and an ultra sound all of which showed nothing. She then had a steroid injection into the cofin joint which worked. Vet told me to get the shoe back on and slowly begin to walk her. As soon as the shoe went on she became very very lame. 3 legged lame and I am very worried. Had farrier check shoe and that seems ok although hoof very hot. The next stage is to send her to the vets college possibly for some hi tech scan.

At the moment she is on one sachet of danilon twice a day. Is it safe to up that to maybe 1 1/2 twice a day? Also do you think I should get the shoes back off as they will be coming off at the vets college anyway and might offer some relief for now.

I'm really, really worried about her.

I would take the shoes off and 'up' the dosage of danilon to 2 sachets, it will make her much more comfortable. I have got my boy on 2 sachets a day, as he has arthritis (he is 18). I think that people worry too much about the 'liver damage' aspect that could be caused, but seeing as your only doing it short term, I don't think you should worry.

Hope this helps.

I'd leave it at one each end of the day.. Its quite a high dosage. You might want to try some cold therepy. Cold hosing and such. Sounds like the trauma of having the shoe on has made her sore again. When was she shod?
What shoes is she shod in?

I need to know these before i can really give an oppinion.

Thanks.

She had her shoe back on on Wednesday evening and she was three legged on Thursday morning so was put back on the painkillers then. She wears heart bar shoes for the laminitis that she had.

in the case that she is wearing the heartbars to support the pedal bone I would be more than tempted to leave the shoes on.
You could up the dose of danilon but i dont think it will do much.. If two sachets isnt.
Is the hoof physically looking bruised on the hoof wall?

Ooops sorry about that, my mistake! Only thought she was on one! I do think its got something to do with the shoes for some reason tho...

Thanks Lou

There is absolutely nothing to see. I wish there was!

Thats what I thought about the danilon though. Just wondered if the shoe was maybe making her foot lie funny causing pain. All sorts of things going through my mind!

I really think you need to speak to your vet about this. Has your farrier seen foot xrays by the way? I certainly wouldnt be upping the dose until you have got 'qualified' advice!

Speak to the vet - Cairo at one point was on 2 twice a day, however he was a 750 k clyde. His minimum dose was 1 a day, anything less than that not worth giving according to my vet due to his size.
