incredibly stupid question about skewbalds...

hopefully (keeping everything crossed) i will be getting a lovely little skewbald mare next week, if anyone wants to give me some good luck vibes that i'll be able to have her i'd be really pleased - its all agreed - just a matter of sorting the fomalities out (passport etc etc)

My question is, what shampoo to use - she's going to need a bath very soon after i pick her up? before i've had chestnuts and bays etc and bought shampoo to match their colour. now the new horse has more white then anything else, and her brown bits are a lovely chestnut colour... so do i just use a non specific shampoo - and if so can some one recommend one good for 'grey' (i've always sworn not to have horses with any large areas of grey, and succeeded for the past 21/22 years, but have really fallen for this little mare so havent a clue what to use!)

I am smitten with coloureds at the moment - would like to breed my chestnut mare in a couple of years to get one that looks like yours.

I also swore to not to get a grey, mostly white coloured, I wanted a black horse!!! See my sig

I just use good old fairy liquid, but I have just discovered using Hibiscrub makes the white bits really white
 
ive got to coloured and i use two diffrent shampoos
i i love is the oyster make and its vanilla smelling, and it is like a bluey purple colour it is brill, i cant remember the name of the other one

ohhh and the oyster shampoo is only about 8.99

SSsshhhh but dont tell anyone but i use the numnah shampoo that Nu-med make,It's like a fiver for a litre and you dont need very much to lather it up.I do advise patch testing first.

Whilst I am luckier than you in that mine has a black tail, forelock and most of a black mane and more bay areas, I do have white legs with lots of hair to contend with.

Body - tresume deep cleansing shampoo - you can mix with a bit of equine blue (equineblue.com) which not only gets the white really white, but darkens the bay areas nicely.

Mane and tail (and legs in my case) are done with 50 - 50 green fairy liquid and arial excel gel (my new secret weapon) - this gets them snowy white. Again you can mix equine blue in.

A final resort for the white areas is to mix up a paste from Zinc oxide (some chemists have it, or you can get it on ebay) mix with water so quite runny then paint on with a brush leave to dry then just flick over with a dandy brush in the morning.

Our mare is skewbald with white legs and a white bum. We use Diamond White on her, its fab on the white bits and great on the brown fits.
 
Dirty Beastie by Whal is very good on greys and any colour.

Please be carefuly using stuff like washing powder, its not meant for horses skin some horses may have a bad reaction to it.

Well, we have a grey section a who thinks he's a hippo, and having tried everything on the market, frankly anything that's going cheap at the supermarket does pretty well. I usually have to do 2 washes for a show! But cowboy magic is brilliant for tails and stains, just not very economical to use on the whole pony. Hope that helps and it all goes well!
 
thanks everyone - i've always used fairy liquid on tails, but prefered to use a proper shampoo on the body - got plenty of options now!

ONLY??? I use Tesco Value baby shampoo, which costs about 65p for 500ml ! gets the girl clean and shiny and doesnt break the bank.

I use Tresemme Deep Cleaning shampoo on my pony's white bits...it's brilliant stuff, much less expensive than special horse shampoos and it smells lovely
