Need to get my horse home from Northern Ireland asap (30 minutes from Belfast). Can anyone recommend a good firm that will bring him back for me. I would like him to come back straight to me rather than on a load and go round the country so realise this will be more expensive any suggestions greatly appreciated.

PM me if you like, a friend of mine has a horse transport business and does very regular runs to ireland, and has 2-horse lorries so travelling your horse on its own won't be a problem. he moves horses for Coolmore so is trusted with megabucks horses all the time!

Don't whatever you do use one of the big transporters, we've bought four horses from Ireland over the years and every damn one had a virus caught on the lorry. (strangles type thing lasted for weeks)
There is a website specifically for transport, ask JM7 she directed me to it the other week, and it has "looking for" sections, so you can find a lift.

Would really support what HH says .. we brought 2 over from Co. Monaghan recently; they were kept at the transporters yard for 4 days (they were supposed to be picked up from the breeder and coming straight to us), waiting to make up a load. They arrived in an ENORMOUS tranporter which couldn't get through the yard gate, so they had to be unloaded in the road in the dark, with traffic backed up behind the lorry.

When we checked them, both were running temperatures and had coughs and thick catarrh - so both were on a course of antibiotics for 2 weeks. Would never, ever, use one of the big transporters again!!!

We had one delivered last week. The girls on the yard had no idea it was coming and nearly had heart attacks when the first one off the lorry was a scraggy cob. Thankfully they were just asked to hold it (in it's baler twine head collar

) and next off was a stunning beast!!

Would def recommend individual transport!!

I will definitely only have him brough back on his own. I've already been warned about the big transport firms who travel up and down the counry dropping off. Don't want that at all want it to be a trauma free for him as poss.

I know this one personally. His name is Charles Cunningham and he runs Equitran. I've seen lots and lots of horses and they always come in top condition. He has a small 2 hrse lorry so can do smaller jobs but obviously they will be more money. His number is 00353 862333121

At the yard where i am stabled, the owner is a transporter, He travels all around the world! Most of his pick ups are from ireland, he is competetively priced. I have used him plenty of times, he is fantastic with the horses and got nice lorries with cctv etc!! Pm me if you want his number?!

I have used Ballinrobe in the past and culdn't find fault with their service or, more importantly, their care. Excellent Firm. Not sure if they have a two horse lorry. I know George Mullins has a two horse MTM van and although I have not used him I have heard good reports. An unshared load will be very pricey though, Could you not go and get him yourself?

Yep - I'd heartily recommend Charles. He's brought 3 loads of horses over for me. The first time it was two rather expensive RID mares; he picked them up and then the weather turned nasty and he had to keep them at his (luxury!) yard for 6 days until they could sail. He sent me e-mails every day reporting on their welfare and even included pictures of them romping in the manege for exercise. And declined any further payment for livery over the originally quoted transport fee (which was very reasonable!) They arrived in tip-top condition!

The other two loads included a couple of barely handled (wild!) youngsters and again, an excellent job with horses arriving safe and well and not a mark on them.

I used John Parker (advertises in the back of h&h) to bring a horse over from Ireland in 2004 and the service was absolutely fantastic. The lorry was amazing and the horse came off as if he'd only been traveling 30mins. It cost £200 from kilkenny to surrey but I'm pretty sure he goes to northern ireland too.

I would really recommend these I personally know them, and they are excellent. They can bring competition horses to compete on the sunshine tour - ready to go straight away. Dont think they will be cheapest though! They have one drop dead gorgeous driver as well!!!! (not that that's important!!) They always stop horse to overnight stable. I know that a lot of the others who say they do actually leave them on the lorry! I could also tell you who NOT to use - but might be breaking rules of forum. Beware there are some very bad companies. As far as I know Parkers do not actually run to Ireland - they have an Irish company deliver to them.

I used LOC horse transport to get my youngster down from Wales (they go to and from reland as well) and I was very pleased. They did have to stop overnight as the lorry broke down (stabled them at a yard) and they were delayed but my the 8mth old colt travelled superbly and arrived at home in Sussex absolutely fine and was absolutely none the worse for wear; having never travelled before he was unstressed and didn't lose any weight, etc. etc.
