My horse is at a private yard and the grass is pretty much finished. She really needs ad lib hay / haylage to keep weight on, but is currently out with 4 other horses who won't get Amy hay for a while and then just twice a day. There are due to stay out in a large field all winter (will be stabled at
night when gers cold) so was going to ask the YM if I could electric fence off a fifth of the field so she stays with the herd, but can have ad lib forage. Is this a daft idea? Will she be ok on her own? Appreciate YM may say no and then will move her - have been looking but decent yards are a but of a trek.

where I used to be we had to section our fields in half as one of mine and the other persons mare didn't get on, lots of kicking and fighting but when it came to the winter the horse that was on her own totally trashed her side of the field! she was knee deep in mud in most of it and walked up and down the fence line, so we put a shettie in with her, which made no difference!

so what im saying, is if you're going to do it, Id do it now whilst its dry and see how she copes? all horses are different, some cope well others stress!! but also have to be careful that the other's don't trash through the fence to get to the food, which also happened with us when the mare wasn't given adlib hay!!
