I am on a really nice yard that has a great indoor school. Already though there are comments about the school always being used by ponies and their owners during the winter so that the adult horse owners never get a chance to use it until after 8.30pm.

Has anyone had this problem before and how did they resolve it?

How about a rota, and only so many to be in the indoor at one time. So say book a time you want to ride and then only allow four to be in the indoor at once, or whatever number suits your yard. Then have half hour slots or hour slots and if you want exclusive use then must pay extra and can only book exclusive use at off peak times or once at peak times. There are plenty of ways of making it work and can change to suit everyone.

It is best to discuss with all the other liveries and YO/YM and all put ideas forward to come to a mutual agreement that way everyone feels they have had input and it will be fairer on everyone

I have been thinking about something similar my only concern is where and who keeps the schedule as I can't honestly see the yard owner wanting to do it. I could volunteer but probably that wouldn't be acceptable either.

Thanks for replying

We have a rota for the indoor school in winter.

Although there are only 7-8 or so liveries that ride, which makes it easier!! The YO basically took a note of when each livery is normally down and made a rota based on that during the peak times from 4pm to 7pm. Each person was allocated 30 mins. If they wanted to swap with each other, fair enough!! Then before 4pm or after 7pm, free to anyone!!

It worked really well when we had all of the really bad weather!! :D

We have a booking sheet. In the winter each horse/rider combination is restrcited to half an hour use only, you are encouraged to share with another person (two is the maximum limit as it is a small school) and times after 5pm can only be booked up to two days in advance.
If somebody fails to turn up for their allotted time they encounter a £1 charge and the time becomes available to others after 10 minutes although usually this just means names being crossed off AFTER the slot was missed and the school not being used at all.
Tension regarding school use is most commonly caused by those who book the school just to turn their horses out in whilst they muck out so at a yard meeting it was clarified that this was not acceptable (although this doesn't seem to be overly enforced).
I'm quite a heavy user of the indoor school in the winter especially when I have to ride two horses and monopolisation has been brought up before but I point out that I have every right to use it with two horses as we pay for two stables!! I never book more than my half hour and I'm always willing to share!!
