I'm picking up new puppy on thursday *bounces* and was hoping for some tips on the best way to introduce him to our other dog (who's 6)? He's very friendly/sociable with other dogs and usually very tolerant of bouncy puppies but obviously I want to avoid him feeling jealous or territorial. Any advice would be great, thank you!

Also, possibly silly question but I decided a while back that I like the name Jack for new beastie then when I went to pick him last week found out that the owner of one of his brothers has called hers Jack - I think the name really suits my lad but could you still call him that or would it be weird?? :o

Cayla has a great puppy guide if you want to PM her - the older dog will need his own space for the first wee while (an escape route :p) with the use of a crate for one or two or both of them, also keep everything fair and even-handed, no favouritism :p - but she would be best to advise :)

How weird is this, my friend called her dog Jack after her late dad. It was too much for her (she bought it to work/trial) so she sold it to another guy on the circuit....called Jack!!!!
So I don't think two Jacks in one litter would be an issue :p they don't really 'know' it is 'their name' in the same way as we do, they just think of it as the word that links them with food, praise, you, fun :) etc if I shouted 'Hobo!' at my dog, he would come running, because it rhymes :p

What CC said! Just to add to the names - I knew a litter called Jack, Zack, Mac and (Tic)Tac...Tac and Zack also became "Jack" :D

The collie I'm looking after just now is called "Buster" - but he'll come to Custard/Mustard etc - you can get some very strange looks :D

Thanks. We were planning on leaving puppy separate over night and older dog will be out on his own for walks and on the yard so should get plenty of attention all to himself!

Will stick with my first name choice then - I sound a bit daft don't I? But I think about things too much sometimes!

Our current dog is called Oscar but the only person who calls him that is my mum. He gets 'Flooby' (long story!) or 'Stinky' from me - I don't think he cares! :D

Tricky introducing pups! I thought it would be a piece of cake but my big lad is not enjoying the experience, especially as one pup is trying to suckle!

We are allowing plenty of separate time for the dog to spend away from the puppies and there is no unsupervised contact yet. He is putting them in their place and has been firmer than I thought he would be. It's scary, but he's not hurting them, just telling them how to behave. He's allowing them much more licence now than the first couple of days so I'm optimistic that he'll accept properly in a wee while.

I am finding it helpful that they copy him so training might be easier than usual.

Thanks for that. It's good to hear other peoples experiences. I'm not sure what to expect from ours. Like I said, he's great with other dogs and loves to play but I'm not sure how possessive he feels about us and his home. He spends about 50% of the day out on the yard or about the farm with us (unless the weather is terrible!) so we should have plenty of opportunities to do separate things with them while pup is little, which hopefully will help!

Unfortunately ours often has selective hearing when there is something more interesting about. He always comes eventually but is hardly a paragon of doggie behaviour! It'll probably do him good to brush up on things while pup is learning!
