Anyone have any expereince post op prognosis? a friends 3yr old tb has got infected hind pedal bone approx 2cm diameter is it worth operating or kinder to pts? x

No personal experience but woman who has since left yard had a horse that had had a nail injury resulting in a fracture that i'm pretty sure got infected and had to be operated on again. Horse is still alive and kicking and being ridden but will never take well to hard work.

I had an Irish Draught mare that had complications with her hoof. To sum up, she injured a leg and due to the weight transfer to the other one, she contracted laminitis in the good hoof.

She basically had good days and bad days but always seemed to be picking up abcesses in the laminitic hoof. It was obviously painful and in the end she refused to put weight on it enough to pick out her feet.

She was looking sad and totally dis-interested in her surroundings and as a last ditch attempt prior to doing the right thing (PTS), she was referred to Leahurst. She was x-rayed and found that she had an infection in the tip of her pedal bone. She stayed for a while, but there was nothing that would undo what had been done and she was PTS before any more invasive work was done.

This was on a front hoof and she was a big mare. Weight bearing was not an option for her. In our situation, PTS was the right thing for her.

I suppose every situation is different and you can only be guided on what the vets are telling you.

An infection is not the same as a fracture and once "eaten" away, cannot be replaced. I don't really know if the prognosis varies depending on where the infection is on the pedal bone or whether it is hind or front hoof.

That doesn't sound good. Infections in bones are bad enough anyway but within the hoof capsule is worse. I'd get the best expert vet advice in the land but I suspect pts will be the only option. So sad. x

My lad got an infected pedal bone back in the summer, it was caught fairly early so only need treating with a sodium something solution injection - can't remember the 'something' atm though sorry.

He had two injections and then had the foot poulticed, and once the poultice was clean for 4 days the hole was plugged with Stockholm tar, so sounds as if my chap was very lucky!

I did research surgery when the diagnosis was made, and there was nothing that made me think it wouldn't be worth a go; however, I would image the success of the operation would be dependent on how advanced the infection was and whether it had caused a sequestrum to form (ie the infected bone has separated from the rest of the pedal bone due to the loss of blood supply).

I would certainly have a long chat with the vets and the surgeon before making any decisions.

What caused the infection? PF had a foot abscess that went into the pedal bone. Vets at Rossdales opened up her foot and scraped all the gunky stuff out, then she had a hospital plate put on. I had to pack the hole with iodine-soaked gauze twice a day. She recovered just fine and has had no problems since.
