Right, pony we got given in jan can with an infected tail/dock where the hair was really wirey and when it came out puss followed so got vet out, took samples and sent them off while we started on two Weeks of antibiotics and a cream as well as bathing him in hipi scrub after the two weeks it just about gone....now it's back with a vengeance and pony is sore again.....anyone got any advice?

P.s the swabs came back fine.

Is it a grey pony?
I'd get vet out again to rescan the wound. If there is pus there then culture for bacteria should be productive.

I am gathering its not sweet itch thats got worst??

  1. As above poster said get the vet out again, there could be a foreign body in there, blackthorn is notorious culprit nasty stuff goes in deep and breaks off leaving the point in the wound to fester.
  2. Could also be an allergic reaction to a fly bite or the pony rubbing on a fence(nail) and getting infected.
  3. Could there be any new chemical thats been used on the fence - buildings.
  4. have you change fly repellents - shampoos etc.

Hey, he had untreated sweetitch when we first got him on his body and he was in a feild with three trees that he constantly rubbed at....ive never had a pony with sweetitch before so this is all new.....nope not changed anything......he is a liver chestnut......he dosent have any bushes next to feild and fencing is electric so no rubbing.......vet is coming out friday.

weve got a sweetitchy horse, never gone too pussy but she has rubbed herself sore a few times..
weve got a boett although at the moment i feel its too thick and dark for the heat and would make her sweat, but its great for midgey months.. we use good covering fly rug and shes in a rug of some sort at all times, and various creams/supplements and fly sprays on the non irritated areas..
did have a mare itch a bite or reaction she had and that turned pussy, vet came out and gave her betnovate n i think.. cleared it up and all is fine now :)

Betnovate is fab....our old pony who got exema used to have that.......its just on his tail, he is in a fly rug but was going to get him a koolcat one as the one he has now is a mesh one and he gets staticy in it.

My old horse had a similar thing, I bought H20 anti fungal shampoo and bathed it whenever he would allow me to as it was so sore..........this got rid of it and it didn't come back.

I thought for ages that I had used something on him that didn't agree with him but know I think it was when I used a humane pulling rake on his tail just before and I think it may have caught his skin and let in an infection....

Try washing it well with Nizoral shampoo - works really well on my mares tail. Dilute in hand hot water and work well into the hair right down to the skin. Leave for 20 mins before rinsing.

Be prepared to re wash every couple of months especally if the weather has been hot and then wet.
