Hey everyone

my horse is on box rest as some of you may know. About 4 weeks in the injured leg swelled quite significantly (6 days after her first laser session) vet was due out anyway and she said she’s not worried.

next day it went down and has remained slightly swollen since then. Have spoken with vet and again said she’s not worried she’s been in a long time, the proximal suspensory is inflamed anyway which is what we’re treating and could even mean it’s healing.

even though a qualified person has told me not to worry I can’t help but look into it?! Does anyone have any experience of this and could it really indicate healing? Or could she have acted like a muppet in her stable and tweaked it even more?

any experience welcome x

Not quite the same thing but my old share horse damaged his suspensory ligament just over a year ago. At the time he was acutely lame but there was no sign of anything else. He did 8 weeks box rest then started limited turnout. At that point, his leg swelled a lot and a huge lump appeared. As he had improved a lot in that time (from not weightbearing at all to 3/10 lame) the vet wasn't worried about the swelling and said the lump was scar tissue but was a bit stumped as to why it appeared then, not at the time of the injury. He said it could be a sign of healing - that the body had laid it down to protect the site of the injury. It disappeared after about 5 months which is roughly how long it took him to come sound but he's an older boy. He's now totally sound but retired as he was 25 when the injury happened and we didn't feel it was fair to bring a 26yr old back into work.

That’s really interesting thank you!

Maybe it is genuinely healing and would make the most sense if it was shortly after the laser. In my head im like how much can a laser work anyway loool so find it bizarre. I’ve learned more about science and anatomy of body/structures the past 6 weeks than I ever did in school Jesus.

She was 3/10 lame on initial vet investigation but also has other issues incl. negative pedal bone angle & potential cannon bone fracture / bruise which didn’t show up on X-ray and only thing to find out exactly would be for MRI but unfortunately not insured so just treated as such.

She’s due for re evaluation next week so not much longer to wait to find out what’s going on in there!

i’m so pleased your boy came sound means there is a little bit of hope❤
