Hi
We live on the west coast of Wales very close to Fishguard and Pembroke Dock .
We would love to take our caravan over to Ireland (medium size touring van) for a couple of weeks or so maybe September time
We want to take our 2 Irish Setters with us .They were both born and bred in the UK are micro chipped and have the normal vaccinations ,
They do not have rabies vaccine is this necessary for Uk to Ireland travel?
Also is Sepember a good time to go what are must see things, any special things going on what is it like for caravan pitches/sites (have own shower loo gas electric etc so don't necessarily need hook up all the time (nice occassionally to recharge batteries and to 'sort out emtying loo!)
Can anyone help?

I've not travelled by the ferry for a loooong time, but you used to be able to bring dogs back and forth for holidays.

Probably best to ask your vet!

Thanks
I intend to check with the vet appointment there on 10/4
One of my boys is being treated for an Immune response disorder (really well and progressing nicely with no relapses)BUT he is likely to be on mediction for another 6 months at least maybe low doses for very long term and not sure they will recomend rabies vaccine be given with his immune response problem at present.
If rabies certificate needed will have to put the trip off and see how it goes.
There is a worry in some veterinary circles that immune disorders can be triggered by these things .

as s4sugar said - my folks live in Northern Ireland and i live in north wales - when we go home as we have Eithin we take her too via holyhead - no need for passports or rabies - if thats any help - as for things to do it depends on when you are going in september and where you are planning on going but there is loads of wonderful stuff to do on the emerald isle

Being retired we are pretty flexible with when we go and where we go.
Thought we would cross Fishgarde Rosslaire and then head wherever we fancy.
iI guess the tourist board will list events on there. I fancy just spending a view dys in one location then moving on mostly in the rural areas.
When do the school holidays end in Ireland ? as would like to wait until after the schools go back
Thanks for the help

law changed on 1st Jan 2012 re: passports

this from http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/pets/

From the 1st January 2012 the requirement is that all pets travelling from the UK to Ireland should be microchipped and accompanied by a pet passport.
As both Ireland and the UK have had no indigenous rabies for many decades, compliance checks on pets travelling between the two countries will not be applied. Pet owners travelling with their pets should therefore not experience any change on the ground from the 1st January.
Pets travelling from other non-qualifying (high risk) countries can also travel into Ireland without quarantine provided the pet has a passport/certificate showing identification and a subsequent rabies vaccination. At least 30 days after rabies vaccination a pet must be blood tested to confirm a neutralising antibody titration at least equal to 0.5 IU/ml. A pet may enter Ireland only when at least three months has expired since a successful blood-test.

schools are back end of august/ first week of september (depends when dates fall). they have a week off at halloween then they finish a few days before christmas. other times of the year, a week off in Feb for halfterm, easter holidays start next week for two weeks. Summer secondary finish first week of june, primary 3rd week.
IF it helps i regularly go between ireland and england with my dog, twice so far this year and they never ask anything, most times dont even ask if theres a dog in the car! as per the regulations they are extremely unlikely to ask for a pet passport so i wouldnt worry too much (up to you though!)
places to go - depends on what you want to see! wicklow is nice, as is west cork/ beara peninsula and dingle peninsula. connemara is also pretty and popular but it depends how far you want to travel.

Thanks everyone I sent an e mail to the Irish tourist board this morning and got the following reply
Thanks for contacting Tourism Ireland with your pet query.

In accordance with the rules set out by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in Ireland, pets coming into Ireland from the UK should be microchipped and accompanied by a pet passport. There is no requirement to be vaccinated against rabies. For further information please click the following link: http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/pets/.

For great ideas for things to see and do throughout Ireland, why not check out our fantastic Discover Ireland website! http://goo.gl/jsgeR.

If there is anything else I can assist with please do not hesitate to get in contact.

the passport form is filled in a verified by your vet. No rabies vaccination is needed they say to allow 10 days for the passport to arrive. It is sent to your vet for collection.

Interesting this has changed -can we hope that it works both ways to help take the wind out of the sales of puppy transporters.
