Doing a bit of research on horseboxes.
Anyone know any useful sources of UNBIASED info on what to look for etc
Also any manufacturers who are good to talk to ?

Regarding 7.5 ton vehicles, I can't give you any particular sources but on speaking to several lorry mechanics I was told to go for either Iveco or Daf. This apparantly is for ease of working on & price of spares. I was warned off Mercedes & Volvo, one mechanic was actually a Volvo mechanic, as the price of parts was excessive compared with Iveco & Daf. None of the mechanics had anything particularly good to say about Man vehicles............ just what I was told.

Oh, was also told it is better to go for a newer lorry with high mileage & a full service history than an older one with low mileage. Although fleet vehicles like TNT etc do many miles they are really well maintained & you will get a full computer readout of everything ever done to the vehicle even bulb replacements.

when I was lorry shopping a couple of years ago I had a very informative meeting with a lorry builder who gave me pretty much the same advice as Toby_Zaphod has posted. The lorry I finally purchased is an Iveco and so far have been pleased with it.

It all depends who you speak to and what they prefer - must admit I've never seen an unbiased mechanic - I've been warned off Iveco/Ford as a definite no go, warned about brakes on DAF's and told Mercs (with upgraded suspension) and MAN were the only decent ones to go for

I've just bought a MAN chassis but tbh was going to go for a DAF - bought MAN as it has belonged to a client of my dads from new and I know it's history - I think personally it's a minefield for chassis' and the best way if you are not mechanicaly minded is to find something you like then pay for an infependent assessor - I'm lucky in that my OH can mend the majority of stuff anyway (and his horse goes in it too so he's very quick at mending things
