HI,

I over heard a convo at the yard with regards to ring bone. What is it hows it diagnosed and what are the signs and symptoms?

I have never seen it and i am new to all of this but would like to know more as it sounds interesting.

Sadly I lost my horse to ringbone on November last year. It was articular ringbone which affected the coffin joint. He was lame in trot on hard surfaces, and on tight circles. After 2 lots of steroid injections and pain relief sadly he couldn't even walk from the field. It was diagnosed via x-rays. Some horses can have the condition for years and with careful management can remain in work. Sadly for my horse it was not to be, I'd only owned him for short while, he could have had it for years before I bought him.

Hi,

My horse has bilateral high articular ringbone. You can get low/high and articular/non articular. I believe that articular ringbone is where the bony growths are on/across a joint (but I was fed so much information it all became a bit of a blur!)

He was 3/10s lame in a straight line and on a circle. First spotted it though because of a swelling across the back of his forelegs when stabled - though this could be as he has some ligament strain.

He initially had a course of tildren and then a 6 week course of cartrophen. Pen rest and was allowed to be walked for 10 minutes (either in-hand or ridden each day).

About 2 months after that he went lame again - back down to the clinic for another course of tildren and then a course of steroids into both joints. Back into the pen and 10 minute work up. He stayed sound, so after 2 weeks he did 15 minutes, another 2 weeks, 20 minutes etc etc.

He did go mildly lame again in between but since we've had the softer, more forgiving ground he's now been in work since this time last year :) He's just a hack now, but he's been to the beach and is generally very full of himself and loving life! He just cant cope with stony tracks now because of where the worst of the ringbone lies.

I've posted pictures of his x-rays in the pictures bit in Vetinary but I can hunt them out again on here if you're interested.
