Hello! I am looking to buy my first horse, I live up in Aberdeen and Turlood Stables near Glasgow always piqued my interest, however, I am unable to find any reviews par their own testimonials. Has anyone ever bought a horse from there or know anything?

Thanks!

Please be careful, you are fishing in shark infested waters! A first horse is best bought with a lot of help and support, & preferably by word of mouth. Especially if you've been looking a while the establishments where you can "slot into a system" and view several horses at the same visit, can be very tempting but are all usually best avoided. (I don't have personal experience of this one.)

I tried to buy daughter a pony from Turlood a number of years ago…dealt with Kate…I queried scabs on a pony..it was ringworm and Kate wasn’t happyId spotted it…want do you want for the price? remains with me. I also looked for me years ago when I first went to Scotland…Billy this time. He was more pleasant to discuss things with but nothing floated my boat at the time. I have met people on yards who have bought horses from them who are saints and others whose horses have had issues which appeared after a few days. Caveat emptor…use your head to buy and always get a vetting by an independent vet..just as you would anyway.

Proceed with extreme caution. although they will have some nice, high quality horses (mainly sjers) the bulk that are affordable to the average buyer are a mixed bunch. They tend to buy lorry loads unseen from Ireland so you are unlikely to get an accurate history. They tend to be turned over quickly so little time will have been spent on them. Also biosecurity in the dealing horses is not great, a few years back social media was full of the story of a horse that arrived at a livery yard with full blown strangles straight from Turlood who claimed it was fine when it left the yard an hour or so previously. All that said, I have had horses from Billy over the years, mainly for my riding school and with careful selection and work they turned out well. Happy to chat via PM if anybody would like as I do have stories I wouldn't publically put on here.

Be careful. I once knew someone who got 6horses from them and none were what they were supposed to be but they wouldn’t refund only exchange. When she finally got one even remotely saleable she sold it and cut her loses.

Personally I wouldn’t buy from them.

Living where I do, I have come across quite a few horses from Turlood. From what I can see, they get boatloads from Ireland and turn them around quickly. At the speed of light. They know very little, or -- arguably, nothing at all -- about them. Whatever you get might be the best horse you ever bought, or a walking vet bill, or bonkers, and you have no idea and neither do they. Their lads who ride for them are fit, young guys, brave as f**, and a horse who might go alright for them might be a lunatic for a more waffly rider.

If you think of it as basically buying from an auction, only assessing what's in front of you, knowing nothing of its history and hoping for the best, you might do alright.
