Hi there
We are still on the hunt for doggy no3 and have been contacted by a rescue organisation in spain about one of these.
Both our dogs are rescues, I have volunteered as rescue centres before, and my family when I grew up always had a rescue dog, so I feel relatively experienced at taking on another, but, would love to know more and general info on the breed, if you have one, etc.

I think they are fab dogs and have seen them working in Spain/the Canary islands, but personally I think there are plenty of dogs who need rescuing here.

I also don't think they would adapt well to our climate, being used to the heat in Spain.

They are a hunting dog with a strong prey drive, they are mostly working dogs over there and not house pets - so they would also take time to adapt to a domestic situation and getting their attention away from small furries would be difficult, I imagie!

Just my opinion, but if you go ahead, good luck, and pics please, I think they are stunning dogs.

LOL - I just had to do a Google images search on that breed as I have never heard of them! The second picture is a Cocker Spaniel!

Do you have a specific contact at this rescue home in Spain then and how would it work with importing him? - would he have to be quaranteened or is it just the same as travelling a dog within the EU?

I don't know a great deal about the breed apart from what i've read on a rescue this rescue site about them. They certainly are beautiful looking dogs. I think there are some people that have adopted podencos on Sighthounds Online forum so they might be able to give you an owners perspective. The best source of info is often the rescue groups themselves, we got lots of advice from various groups when we were looking to adopt our greyhounds. They want you to be sure you can cope with taking on a dog so usually give a fair picture of the good & bad bits.

There's info on that rescue link of the process but they have to have all the necessary tests & vacinations and then wait 7months in the rescue till they can travel to the UK on their pet passport.

Personally i don't think it matters where a rescue dog comes from as long as a homeless dog finds a home. Many countries do not care for there dogs like we do in the UK so sending the dogs to other countries is perhaps the only chance they have of getting decent homes. Ireland regulary exports retired greyhounds to the UK & abroad because they can't home many there.

I'm not a fan of rescuing from abroad for several reasons, to keep it short, as CaveCanem mentioned there is no lack of rescues in your own country but most importantly for me is the risk with diseases.

Rescued dogs from Spain can carry a disease that doesn't always show itself at once (silent carriers is what I would say in Swedish, if that makes sense?) and as I recall it, we have no means to detect it unless it has developed the disease. That has happened here in Sweden, again as I recall it, somebody owning their rescued Spanish dog for maybe two years suddenly found out it had developed this disease and their only choice was euthanasia or sending it back to Spain.

I would not compare Ireland and UK with mainland Europe, your islands have a long history of exchanging animals and you're privileged that no animals can just walk over your borders without peoples assistance. Personally I treat the threat of diseases that exist in different countries in mainland Europe with the utmost respect.
