Hi, i bought a section D yearling and he's now standing 14.2/3 hh and will be 2 in mid May, his dad is llwynhywel magic man and his grandad is thorneyside the boss I'm not much for knowing about breeding. Ive never owned a section D before although my mum has a few horses and knows a bit about them. Was wondering how big anyone thinks he will make and also what are they like to ride. He's very leggy and I would upload a picture but I'm not sure how or whether I can!!! He's Got the veryyyyy cheeky section D nature 😀😂 I'm only 5'2 and petite so size isn't a big deal but would be interested in hearing what you all think. Thank you!

Can"t help with height but section D's can be very stubborn and opinionated and will need careful consistent handling from the start. If you don't have experience with young horses I would suggest you get help from a professional.
Having said that they can be very versatile and a lot of fun. Just make sure he knows the ground rules and make sure he stays within them.

Thank you! All mine and my mums horse we've had from youngsters and some were very stubborn but great now! Ive had experience with horses that aren't pure bred D but with welsh in them so I have some experience but this is my first time I've owned a pure section D before although I do have to say his ground work is great and he's very layed back with good manners for a welsh I would say 😀 but definitely will make sure he has consistent handling, thank you for the advise very much appreciated!

I'd say yours will make a large D, like 15.2hh or more. What are the lines on the dam's side?

I have a 20 month old section D, 2 in May. Mine is from very sharp lines, and it shows. She was definitely bred for the show ring! However, she has to be the most loving, friendly horse I have ever met in my entire life...!

She is quick to learn and I have to be consistent with the rules. Pretty much every day I am reminding her that my feet will not move first, and she can't invade personal space. She knows what is the correct way to be but does like to test. Overall I'm pleased with how she is turning out though.

Mine is currently 13.3 hh, 14.0 on bum. She does not look leggy at all, but she is going to be a stocky mare and already is.
I expect her to make 14.2/3hh. Her mother is 14.3, her father is 14.2. Her grand sire is 14.3, grand dam 14.2, grand sire 14.1, grand dam 14.2.

I chose her for her bloodlines as I knew the type of cob I wanted, I wanted a wide, chunky type that will hopefully be good enough for the flat riddens and because of that I didn't mind the height as much, as should take up my leg if as wide as I hope!

Hope that helps!

Welsh Ds are in a realm of their own. I don't find them stubborn - actually the opposite - but they are anxious, usually highly strung and quirky by nature. I think they're very willing to please but there's a really fine line with them, especially when discipline is involved. They scare easily, I find.

My own was pretty much everything they are described as, and then some. I swing from "Never again!" to "I'd never have anything else!".

She sounds like she will be incredible! Sorry I made a mistake his sire is llwynhywel Welsh magic, grand sire thorneyside the magic man and great grand sire thorneyside the boss. And his dam is Glantraeth Miss Sophia and grand dam Glantraeth Miss Julie! Not too sure on the height of them though! He is 15.1 on his bum, so I think he will be a large section D.

That was really helpful! Compared to other youngsters we've had and compared to one of our heavy weight cobs he is extremely layed back and he never pits his strength against you so very easy to handle. He can get a little frisky when trotting in hand, at the moment I'm just trying to get him used to being in his own as he can panic a little and leading him in walk and trot! Although, I have heard that the larger welsh Ds don't do so well in the show ring! All the basic stuff, picking his feet out, hosing his legs and putting rugs on etc. he's very well mannered so hopefully with constant handling he should be a star!

I wouldn't say they are stubborn, more sensitive and very clever. They also sent suffer fools gladly and will play people up that don't understand them.

This is mine. Very clever, quite eager to please but over sensitive at times and gets herself in a hysterical tangle if I don't manage her well :D

I have grown to absolutely love her though, so trainable and ridiculously cute
