Today I decided to take my little mare out for her first hack by herself. She's been going so well lately I figured now was as good a time as any to give it a go. So with dog and mum in tow off I went.
I decided to go around one of the nearest villages as there are a few good spots you can get onto some fields for a good canter. Unfortunatly major draw back of this hack is you have to ride a long a main road with a 60mph speed limit that massive skip lorries frequent.
She's great in traffic, thank goodness, because no sooner had we got out onto the road than some brainless driver speeds straight up a long side us. While another car is coming in the opposite direction, he had no room to get past so should have stayed behind. He was almost touching suni's backend and I'm not exaggerating when I say that If I'd turned my toe out a fraction I could have knocked on his window. I was so mad, there was absolutly no need for him to have gotton so close. He not only endangered me, my horse, himself but also the on comming driver. Luckily, like I say, Suni is good in traffic so she kept trotting but just got a bit agitated. So I waved my arms about at him and shouted as he drove off in the hope that he won't almost hit anyone else.
On a brighter note pony was pretty good, for a nappy naughty mare. She did bronc and canter on the road (when no cars were coming) and she did get a bit funny on a tight lane with a big 4x4 coming, making her wobble about a bit. However we had a good canter (and buck) on the fields which cheered her up. Also lorry drivers seem to suddenly have got really nice as we met quite a few articulated type lorries on the country roads and they all gave us time to pull into field openings out of the way and drove really slowly and waved, bless.
On an even happier not I won £40 off horseresearch.net!!

Sorry for long post/rant but does anyone else find idiotic drivers get there back up, especially as it was my little girlies first time out alone!

My advice would be to initially go out with another road safe horse and rider to get your horse confident in traffic.

Also always wear long skleeved Hi-Viz jacket, hat band and reign covers so that other road users have every opportunity of seeing you and your horses.

One of the advantages of wearing long sleeved Hi-Viz and hat band is that many motorists will think you are mounted police.

Also if you have not done it take the BHS Road safety course which will help you to communicate and control traffic on the roads.

I regularly hack out in company and have been hacking along that very road for years. I also was wearing a bright yellow long sleeve jacket so that I would be easily seen (doesn't have a silver reflective strip but is high visibility.) It wasn't the fact that he didn't see me, it was the fact he was a bad driver.
Also she is confident in traffic, as she displayed by not being naughty when the car was almost on her bottom.
I also have taken lessons in how to direct traffic and have been doing so for years, I had my arm out to ask him to slow down but he ignored me. I can only do my best, I can't stop him from being an idiot.

If I'm hacking a horse out for the first time on its own I generally do it at 6am on a sunday morning. Far less chance of meeting a motorist in a hurry than during the day on a working week day

It was 8am and the traffic was very quiet, there were hardly any cars I think on the main road I saw 4 or 5 cars, if it was rush hour I would have seen closer to 30

ETA Can I just clear up that I'm not a complete and utter idot or a novice. The horse has been hacked out from the time I got her (almost 2 years ago.) So it isn't like she's never seen traffic before, a huge tractor went past us on one of the lanes and she didn't batter an eye lid. I also knew my route and know the roads and what traffic is like at what times etc. I didn't take my horse out with the intention of scaring it silly or getting us killed or anything. Apart from that one driver it was a nice hack, I'm just saying why are some drivers so inconsiderate.

Let your foot touch the car, then when the driver jumps out, tell him you are calling the police and making a claim for injury against him. I suspect he will get in his car and make himself scarce.
