Today I decided to take my little mare out for her first hack by herself. She's been going so well lately I figured now was as good a time as any to give it a go. So with dog and mum in tow off I went.
I decided to go around one of the nearest villages as there are a few good spots you can get onto some fields for a good canter. Unfortunatly major draw back of this hack is you have to ride a long a main road with a 60mph speed limit that massive skip lorries frequent.
She's great in traffic, thank goodness, because no sooner had we got out onto the road than some brainless driver speeds straight up a long side us. While another car is coming in the opposite direction, he had no room to get past so should have stayed behind. He was almost touching suni's backend and I'm not exaggerating when I say that If I'd turned my toe out a fraction I could have knocked on his window. I was so mad, there was absolutly no need for him to have gotton so close. He not only endangered me, my horse, himself but also the on comming driver. Luckily, like I say, Suni is good in traffic so she kept trotting but just got a bit agitated. So I waved my arms about at him and shouted as he drove off in the hope that he won't almost hit anyone else.
On a brighter note pony was pretty good, for a nappy naughty mare. She did bronc and canter on the road (when no cars were coming) and she did get a bit funny on a tight lane with a big 4x4 coming, making her wobble about a bit. However we had a good canter (and buck) on the fields which cheered her up. Also lorry drivers seem to suddenly have got really nice as we met quite a few articulated type lorries on the country roads and they all gave us time to pull into field openings out of the way and drove really slowly and waved, bless.
On an even happier not I won £40 off horseresearch.net!!
Sorry for long post/rant but does anyone else find idiotic drivers get there back up, especially as it was my little girlies first time out alone!
